FINALLY GOT IT BACK!

small update. Carb has been sent to Scott Smith. got K frame back from shop. on a side note told my two sisters I got the car back, at Christmas time! First thing my sister asks "Thee Duster?" My sisters were in charge of painting the raised letters on the firestones back in the day!

Warranty engine taken apart after sitting 47 years! Need the experts to help. Bigger letter D on top of pistons? Pencil written on back of pistons 40 1-8 assuming cylinder numbers? part numbers on pistons are 2899480-81 notice pan rail is blank on both sides and no raised spot where vin usually is

Was hoping for some comments on the letter D and pencil markings on pistons? Thanks!
 
A few of the various motors had the pistons matched to the bore to the hundred-thousandth, five decimal places. I've never seen a factory publication for anything other than the 426, but there's pics on the web of 440's and even 383's with painted letters on the side of the block, barely visible under the factory paint. If you look in a FSM that has the 426 specs, it's in the engine section. Under "Specifications" at the back, cylinder block bore. "A" is 4.24975, "B" is 4.25025, etc to "E" at 4.25175. It's a .002" range broken into 5 steps. If I had to guess, your 340 got assembled with the bores about .00125 on the big side. It might be .040" from the factory.

Like I said, this is just a guess.
 
Should be stamped on the pan rail A, B, C, or D, and the pistons should match that hole.
 
Also should be stamped in front of block, my 71 block came .020 over bore and .001 under crank.

I have seen engines with stamped pistons but the block not being marked over the years. But yes they are fitted pistons to the bores. Just put it back together, prime up the oiling system and let it rip!

Hell, Ma Mopar did that all the way up to the 2.2L engines. I remember seeing over sized camshafts in the early carbureted engines. They didn't throw anything away.
 
got engine apart. note parts number written inside of timing cover. Did the factory do this to make it easier to get one? Also cleaned up one valve cover will be posting them for sale.

Prepping engine for re assembly, decided to look at seats that were on shelf.......look under front seat. build sheet!!!!!! It was a great day!
 
Original bell housing taken off of car in May 71 Also found NOS Sharkstooth grille parking lenses!

Notice Ma mopar was a little stingy with paint on cover. Going to use both just as they came.

Yes it has been fun! Hoping to get to the body shop and post some pics of progress! It’s going to be a long process but it’s already been over 40 years since it ran so I can wait a little longer!

I have a 67 Barracuda notchback that was my brother's and grew up working on and drag racing . The car is still here and he is not but having the car in my family for close to 40 yrs. keeps a piece of him with us.
 
Started getting engine back together. Hoping to get to body shop this week will post pics of progress. 294 pan cleaned up pretty good!
