Ford 272 C.I. runs low 11's. Why do Mopar guys need 408's?

How come Ford guys can run with small cubic inches? Fox body 302's, 289 Falcons, or even a 272 ?? Us mopar guys need 360's or 408's. In some cases 512 BB's !!!! :eek:

Ford guys seem to love the 289/302 over the 351, never heard of the 272, cool car though.
 
K/G. What do you think it cost to build that. It’s not a 6000 RPM tractor engine.

EDIT: McLeod clutch (probably a soft lock) and Racer Brown cam.

We got light cars, I thought 302 had poor flow, doesn't a 318 head flow better?

Until you've had a 408 on the street in your a body, you haven't lived...
 
I think it's due that 340/383/426/440 were our main performance engines, there never was a performance 318 bet if there was it would be thought of more like the chev 327, chev had high output 283/302/327 kind of 305 same with ford. only small displace factory performance engine we had was 273 but only has a small following in the general car community.

It took a while before 360 became a viable platform some still think of it as a boat anchor compared to 340, most can't look past which engines the factory deemed performance.

isn't that the truth. once off the shelf pistons hit the market guys started to see what a 360 could do.
 
O quit it now, put the dang money in a 318 and go run low 11's.
Cheap isn't going to get a small cube engine in the sub 11's. So quit being so cheap. lol :D

I did not mention anything about budget or cheap in the title or in my post. :)
 
That car is VERY light, most if not all panels fiberglass, lexan windows, etc. Probably only 400-450hp needed to hit low elevens with it. Regardless, dang fast!!!

(And a 272 is usually a y-block early 50s replacement for the flathead. I have one, [actually a 239, 1954], I usually say it won't pull a fat girl off a tricycle. Not strictly true.... it won't pull a skinny girl off a trike either).
Edit: the last Ford six I saw that ran like that, had 1 1/2 Cleveland four barrel heads on it.

I suppose it could be a .060 over 260......

Or he could just be lying about it on the fender.....


I tell people my Opel has a 396, a hundred over. Not my fault if they don't think 496.

The only way to know for sure is to see the class rules. In the bygone days of Modified Eliminator (and in some Comp Eliminator) a 270 inch V8 was the norm.

Thats why the Chrysler V8’s weren’t real competitive. Way too tall of a block to start with.

Thats why the R blocks started coming with 9 inch decks that could go down to 8.500 or some ****.

Typical Chrysler tactic. Too little too late.
 
Ford did have a 221 and a 260 V8, they could easily grow to a 272. But this guy is 6 popp'n it ??? :) I seen a Pontiac that had a 4 cyl (from the factory, half a 389) and it would go 11's
