I have a friend that is working on a 69 Barracuda with a 340 that is not original to the car. I am concerned that he might have a mix of 1970 and 1969 parts (timing cover, water pump, harmonic balancer. Can somebody post a picture of that stuff for a 1969 340, from both the drivers and passenger sides as if you were timing the car?

It needs cleaning and freshening up, but this is a 340 in my 1970 Duster, but the front of the engine including pulleys, balancer, water pump, brackets, power steering pump, and radiator are all from a 1969 Dart 273:

Timing marks are on the passenger side, 69 and back.
Timing marks are on driver side, 70 up.

Water pump bottom hose on driver side in 69 & back.
Water pump bottom hose on passenger side on 70 up.

69 & back water pump is cast iron, smooth.
70 up water pump is ribbed and 3/4 inch taller than 69 & back
69 & back water pump shown in post 3.

Mixing parts is misery.
 
So my motor isnt the original in my 70 Swinger, but the timing marks on my 340 motor are on the drivers side, and the lower rad hose is on the passenger side also, and the block numbers tell me that its a late 68 cast. So is it possible to put a 70 timing cover/water pump onto a 69 block just to keep timing marks and rad hose in the 1970 positions?

You can mix and match all of the parts together, but you will regret it. Every thing will interchange, but you may have a real mess trying to get pulleys aligned for a fan belt. Even worse with power steering.

You need to have the same vintage timing cover and harmonic balancer to get functional timing marks. You also need to be aware the balancers are different between cast and forged crank engines.

I switched from a 69 set up to a 71 to put a 71 factory air setup in my car. It was a real mess. The low mount Saginaw power steering I used was designed for a 73 up car with spool mounts. It interferes with the biscuit mounts on my 69. Turned out ok, but had to have custom power steering hose made.
 
Yep, i did the reverse on 70 340 block. I have 69 and down timing cover. It can be frustrating mixing/matching years.

Trying to stay all 69 on mine
So need to find 69 p/s stuff ?!!
So any v8 68 /69 is ok ?
Seen the guy with a ps cooler
Is that something special?
And a saw that 3 Groove lower is that an a/c crank pulley ....think i got a 2 groove from someone

I have a 70 engine in a 68 Barracuda. I made the assumption I needed a 70 balancer because the crank is keyed for one. I wanted to put a 68 timing cover but used a 70 in lieu of. The question is, will a 68 balancer on a 70 crank move the timing mark to the passenger side?
 
Post pics Mike of setup. I can post pics of my 69 setup but looks like you've got enuf already. There were also different alt brackets. I'm talking the lower adjuster arm. I've seen 3 different.
No new aftermarket balancer comes with TDC mark at the 69 and earlier location. You have to remark it is all.

I think a lot of older years may work on the ps pump. I also depends on which ps pump you have. Saginaw is the preferred pump that I think they sell repop brackets for. You just have to figure out what you got and scrounge around for parts. Post an ad on here.

The ps coolers were on taxis and police cars & some high performance cars I think. Probably not needed for most folks.

If you have a real 68 balancer the timing marks on it will be on the passenger side. You will need to remark it, or just time it by ear.

I think the 66-68?? LA 273s and 318s had a bolt on timing tab that you can also use to solve that problem. I had one on mine for awhile. They are hard to find, but usually only $20-30.

You could buy a new one marked properly, but you need to make sure you get one matched to your crankshaft. I think the cast crankshaft started in 72 or 73. With a 60 year old engine, who knows what is in it…
 
That is some really good information there guys, thank you for all of that! I never would have known that my 69 motor has a 70 front end on it. Everything is running really good, no issues with belts or pulleys( no ps ), and my rad looks to be new, so I dont think I will mess with anything. EXCEPT...I better check that my timing is accurate and remark or use a timing tape as necessary.
And sorry to @str12-340 , I didnt mean to hijack your thread.

Yea im still a couple of years out
Been collecting parts
Car still runs great with the slant
So want to have everything ready and rebuilt when I do the swap

Think 71 was cast .. they are external balanced ...

If you can get all the belts & stuff ironed out before it goes in the car, that would be fabulous! Many more swear words involved when you are working in the engine compartment….

So the flywheel i have is for a cast

so a few pieces of info to clarify:
forged to cast change happened mid year in 1972 so you might have a forged engine depending on when the engine was built as opposed to when the car was assembled.

You have to match the timing cover, the harmonic balancer, both 69 and down or 70 and up. They will bolt in place but timing mark will not match the scale in the timing cover. The drivers side lower radiator hose and power steering pump for 69 will cover up the timing marks on a 70 and up timing cover and of course the water pump and radiator have to be matched for drivers or passenger side. So the only reasonable way to approach this is to have the timing cover, harmonic balancer, water pump and radiator (and the power steering pump and brackets if you have PS) be either 70 and up or 69 and down. There are also differences in the pulleys so add that to the list. The A-body year and motor year make no difference as long as everything from the front of the block is matched.

The nightmare I am facing is a non-original engine that has been in a car buried in a shop for 20 years. We know it has a 69 and down water pump and radiator and a 70 and up timing cover, now trying to figure out which balancer it has to figure out how to get a matched 69 and down set up that is complete.
 
So just have to look for a external balanced dampner cast crank
If it is then is then your screwed cause need a 70 up cover to match your timing marks
