Well, I'm installing the Dougs Headers in my 68 Notch 4spd 340 car, and im guessing a mini starter will be added to the list of changes. I was really looking fwd to listening to the classic Mopar starter aka Highland Park Hummingbird once again but that's Hot Rodding. What mini starters do you guys like?

I got one for a 96 V6 Dakota. It has worked great for 10 years so far.

I use one off of a '98 Dakota with a 5.2 and it has been going for several years. Just a carquest brand "new" starter.

I am guessing at this, you did not say why you had to change starters, I miss my gear reduction whine too. So it's a clearance problem, right? My tti's wanted a custom z-bar , then that got into the way of a Dakota starter. Not sure on your Doug's. You can cut, bend,, weld and modify your z-bar to clearance things, may have to anyway. But my next starter will probably be a Powermaster indexable starter. You may need a heat shield too, I did. '69 Dart Swinger.

Well, I'm assuming a mini starter will be needed. Im focused on p/s box clearance right now, jacking up engine tomorrow after right header comes back off. Then I'll get to the starter steering column and z bar. Glad im doing this now and not after paint, still praying for cooler days here in Phoenix. Thanks for your help

It just seems like the '80's song by the FIX, One Thing Leads To Another. I have had to deal with the starter, clutch, and header issue about 3 times or so, and I don't even have the DART running yet. There will be a new list of gotchas then. Keep an open mind!

Affirmative! Getting mentally prepared to install reinstall all the players as many times as necessary. Wishing I would have bought the raw steel headers and ceramic coat later

You can't protect it forever. If you ever have a cyl get hot, it will cook and discolor the ceramic. Just do what you gotta do.
It's all a part of it!

So I picked up a starter for a 98 Dakota 5.2. Maybe I got the wrong part but this ain't working.

That looks like a chevy starter to me. They've given you the wrong part.

Makes sense why it looks like a Chevy starter. Good ole Iron Duke.

Batting .500 on starters, I'll take it!. I'm pretty close on z bar, somethings just not quite right yet. Ive got the " hooked" bar tab facing down @ clutch fork, and the straight bar tab up towards firewall. Correct? Tear down was some years ago, memory fuzzy.

Z-bar is in correctly., bushing spring clip ret towards the out side drivers side. Clutch pedal rod looks a little off for some reason, don't see the nylon washer either, don't try bending it, it will break. Don't ask how I know this.
The dakota starter is close just like mine, maybe closer, I have a Lakewood scattershield. I put a DER heat shield on, will see if it saves the starter.

Thanks Cruze, clutch rod is just resting there for a visual. At the bell housing, the ball pivot bracket holes don't seem to wanna line up with how the pieces want to align, I've got one bolt in loosely.

Thanks. Yeah gotta believe heat shield is mandatory on starter. So the damper pulley bolt holes on the new 340 happened to be equidistant. Had the old 318 crank pulley chromed then of course got to elongate the rogue hole. This part of the build seems to be crawling, but im a determined guy.
