How did nitrous get such a bad rep...?

Agree BUT
All it take is a nos cyl, to not even hang open, but to leak or not seal 100%, without you knowing, and Boom there goes your nice carbs and tunnel ram intake..................

That’s either operator error or a part malfunction.

Summer of 1983 I watched a guy break a holley carb in half because he armed the system and had the nitrous on at the hit.

That's why I personally have routed mine not only through a full throttle switch, but through the button on my shifter. I want to be a 100% in control.. and that's just to activate the relay which itself is grounded through a low fuel pressure switch..
 
And starting the car First........then slowly opening the nos bottle to make sure your eng don't tell you..... you have a problem!:wtf:

Yes I was planning on that as well...
Of course it all has an arming switch...
I've taken just about every precaution I can think of or research.. if it goes KAPLOOEE!! it won't be for lack of trying...
 
Only experience with nitrous I have was in the early 2000s on a (GULP) BBC in a '68 camaro, but I will say...it was nice to have it run so mildly on the street, and be able to go fast at the track. Even as a nice driver it was still fun enough when the traffic lights turned green, but it wasn't like you had to be wary of unleashing 700 HP every time you throttled it on the street...That chebby did mid 12s without/ mid 10s all night long on the stuff, that motor lasted just fine. More involved to keep it tuned right but hey that's part of the fun, right? Most folks didn't seem to have a problem with it, mainly just a few guys that couldn't keep up after spending big bucks just to break into the high 10s. As far as any 'stigma', that was the real issue I think? "Hey I had this blah-blah built by whatever badass so-and-so and you come out here and beat me just beacuse you put a bottle of gigglegas in the trunk!?" Um, yep!
 
No problem with it today as I assume most are running it....at least from what I’ve seen at various tracks. But back in the 80’s in its infancy many guys were going to great lengths to conceal their nitrous setup on their car and running around being deceitful, lying, bullshitting about their cars engine. Saw it firsthand with a buddy and his 67 Ford Fairlane w/390 4-speed and 4.10. Rode in it with and without around the streets and he ran against a lot of others and sometimes would use it to pull out a win. There’s some legitimacy to the notion that some don’t like to lose and will do anything to win. That’s where my dislike for it came from for many years, but actually it’s the dislike of deceitful or bullshitter types, not the nitrous.
 
@Cudafever you got to stop watching all the pro mod YouTube videos of nitrous explosions LOL.. you got spare carburetors if anything happens..lol...

First time I ever heard of nitrous was when I was pulling Three Sisters on I-80 in Wyoming.

I had a Pete with a tuned up 1693TA Cat and I got my *** dusted by another Pete with the same engine.

Hollered at the driver on channel 19 and he explained what he had. On the next pull we put our trucks side by side and when he hit the button he was gone!

Damdest thing Id ever seen...

The bottle has been sitting in your spare room so long it's probably out of date and nobody will fill it..

I called the local fire supply about that and I think they said they charged $40 to recertify a bottle.. back when I was just getting started with this and thinking about a swap meet bottle and someone said something about certification I went ahead and checked my local sources..
