How important is a "High Performance" water pump?

The water pump I have is fine, but I figure rather then messing with taking off the paint and gasket crap, I'd just buy a new one.

Now I can get a new one for $30.00 at NAPA. but then when I look online I see these "High Performance" ones from $80.00+

This is for a stroker 360, do the "High Performance" ones really do anything more then the stock one for $30.00?

Thanks!

The performance pumps will push more volume, work really well with a big aluminum rad. If your running a stock rad it won't make much difference and may cause problems without a shroud. If your not running hot now it's probably not something you "need". Just what I've seen.

Get a NEW pump for an A/C car. I got one for the Duster a
couple years ago. I went for the lifetime one. Kept the recipt
just in case. I have not had any problems. When I had the orignal
rad or the alum. one i put in.
That way you save some money and get some good cooling.

The only difference in the pumps is the impellar. They use one from a A/C car and thats it,know difference in housing casting or shaft, just the impellar.Get one fram a A/C car of the same make and year, your done, mrmopartech

Is the A/C pump the same as the cop pump? Have read on other sites (and listed cop accessories) that Mopar had listed it's own "high perf" water pump on 318/360 headed cop engines for the M-bodies due to high idle times of cops. Usually if I'm replacing a water pump I'm asking for the cop pump so am I getting an interchangeable A/C pump?

Haven't spent time on this but when you get a 6 blade it comes with the reinforcement tubes around the bearing, at the one I've bought.
Now with that in mind, all the reading I've done says the cop pumps have the reinforcement tubes around the impeller bearing, so...I guess?

I was thinking hot pursuit/high speed chases vs cooling time and such.

City trucks got the 8 blade from what I've seen cause they do nothing but idle.lol

I just called autozone. the water pump w/air is $12.00 cheaper! you'd think it would be the other way around! why would that be?
and the one w/air is suppose to keep our engines cooler?

Just a FYI on the recipts for parts.
Some of the recipts are affected by the heat in a car and will fade away to a blank piece of paper. I keep a log book on my cars. Both the log books and any recipts are kept in the house.

Seems like even the talking heads can't get on the same page when they write s*** up. LOL. GO figure. Just goes to show you that if you want the deadnuts truth, go ask the engineer who designed it. (Then talk to another one and get a different story..been there done that for an article I was writing ages ago for the one year only "true" 318 4bbl and the 318/360 headed cop engine.) But this would explain the reason why my A/C truck has the reinforcement tubes like the cop pumps from all the M-bod's I've owned. I was thinking that it was because it was a truck, but the A/C explains it better.

hmmm.....
Let's see my 6 blade pump on my 340 has the reinforcement tubes and cost more than the 8 blade A/C pump with no reinforcement tubes on my 410, meanwhile Frank Adkins says for 1970/later chrysler came out with a police 360 pump that has a heavy duty 5/8 shaft and 'ribs' on the snout=6 blade
At least thats what the reality of it is from what I see/n.

And.... mopar says use the 6 blade for iron heads & drag racing and call 8 the blade high flow for aluminum heads/racing look in the back of old catalogs/1/4 mile recipes.

THEN Larry Schreib says to use the 8 blade A/C in racing and says it has a smaller impeller, absorbing less power @high rpm no mention of iron/alum

Now is larry talking the weight of the shaft? no mention of the blade size??

I like the Mopar recommendation of the 6 blade w/high rpm my self, don't like bearing failure and 6 blades makes sense to me, like less power loss and slower flow in comparison to 8 blade but this applys to 7000+RPM.IMO
My 410 won't need to be at 7000 or even 6500 to make it's peak the way it's set up, but will definitely make heat with 10.1 and iron sitting in a drive through or coming off the freeway.

I have an 8 blade pump on my 340. Its listed as a cop/motorhome pump. Also, its shaft diameter is larger at 5/8" instead of 1/2".
