Does anyone have any experience with this camshaft? the description on Hughes website specifically says its for low compression engines. just curious if anyone had used it and how well it performed.

There was somebody on here that had one recently and it idled smooth. The complete opposite of what Hughes says the Whiplash is made for. Look at the duration @ .050. It's nothing.

It's not a performance cam it's a tickle your ego cam or at least it's supposed to be...

That's why i was curious. I seems small to make any kind of rumble or much of a power gain.

I have one of the older grinds by Hughes that I plan to run. It's not the Whiplash but at the time it was their largest offering. It's like 220 @.050 on a 108. It'll be noticeable, but I'm sure not be what I'd call a rough idle. I don't know what Dave's thinking was with this new line of camshafts. It appears he was trying to do the Erson reverse grind thing. He's about 20 years too late and his grinds are way too small now. For someone whose supposed to be a Mopar expert, I'm not the least bit impressed.

Doug Dutra talks about (and seems to prefer) the reverse pattern/I thought I had a cam picked out for mine but now I aint so sure.... but my build isnt an A body.... most likely going into a D150, "might" instead find its way into my Volare.

He does and he's a legend genius when it comes to slants. I take nothing away from him. I've done a boatload of reading on reverse grinds particularly in slants and from what I've gathered, it really doesn't make a lot of difference. I'll put it this way. I wouldn't pay "extra" for it, if that makes sense.

Oregon Cams probably would be the best bet. They have slant experience and offer some of Dougs profiles. I’ve not dealt directly with them but I have one going in. I understand that they would be glad to discuss and recommend something. But like I said I’ve not dealt directly with them so I can’t back that 100%

When you call Oregon cam grinders (in Vancouver Washington LOL...) Ask for Ken. He's the owner.. since I'm close I just go up with my Cam and lifters and have them done the way I want them. Pretty much he can grind whatever do you want...

Just like I said though. Smooth idle.

Also, they redesigned their slant six cams very recently. The old slant six Whiplash had more duration than the one in the OP's first post. The new ones suck.

Glad you asked. Before the fire devastated Doug's property we were working on a new cam grind for pure low end torque, on hold indefinitely now. What do you want out of a cam? The compression has little to do with it.... That cam is very similar to the Oregon Cams 2106 which I used in my build (yet to be started up) but with more duration on the back side of the lobe. After modeling dozens of cam profiles with Doug I agree with RustyRadRod the reverse pattern does not make much difference in the modeling. What do you want is the question. The Oregon Cams 2106 with the shorter duration and 108 LCA will give you a lot of kick at lower RPM but die off over 4000RPM (I was after 100% the most kick under 4000RPM in my build). Dougs RV-10 is similar to the Oregon Cams and gives _just_a_little_bit_more_ at low end but not enough to notice. His RV-15 looses a bit at lower RPM for a bit of a gain between 4000 and 4500. That cam is more similar to Doug's RV-15 so if you want to wind it out a bit then it is a nice balance. The lift is all you need even if you put in larger valves (assuming naturally aspirated). Any more you are spending more energy opening the valves than you get in increased flow. The cam we were working on was in the 192 degree duration range which no one would actually offer from the big names because it "anyone in their right mind" would not buy that cam but it did give heck of a low RPM kick over the RV10 or 2106 and did die out very badly over 4000 RPM but we were after a 100% daily driver cam that would be a blast gassing it from the red lights.

Also the Comp Cams 252 degree really lost a lot under 2500RPM but give a good kick up to 5000-5500RPM... it is all about what you are after.

Oregon cam grinding well bases conversation and his decision on. What you want.... Not who says it will get the most power or who says it will get this or who says it will get that but what do you want and what are your expectations...

Every time he gave me what I wanted even when he tried to talk me out of it he still gave me what I wanted LOL...

Dutra had some experimental grinds he was told would be crap too by the grinder.... in the real world they were crap... we put them in my model and that predicted they would run like crap as well :)

.. not mine...

This is the setup I truly want to run. I love the look of it. I am so happy to see that two factory air cleaners fit. it looks amazing. I am looking mainly for bottom end grunt. My little wagon is not going to be built to out run an ls or anything but I do want better red light to red light performance. I prefer more torque over hp personally. i have been looking at building a "long rod" /6 ever since I got the car from my brother. it is mostly all original and I really don't want to V8 swap it. I have fallen in love with the slant. I guess I need to just buy Dutra's book and do some more reading. I don't expect to have a super choppy idle but a little bump would be nice.

Biggest bang would be the Oregon cams 2106 (easy), Dutra RV10RDP (hard if Doug lost his stock in the fire) and the Dutra duals with the pipes run back at least behind the transmission cross member before the collector back into one pipe (much harder). Easier if willing to go to a mini starter but I am on a mission to make this work. Make sure you time the cam.

I wasn't aware Doug had a fire. How long ago has this been? That's terrible news.

The intake I would like to find is the two 2 barrel intake. There's one on eBay right now.....but of course, my bank account won't like it. LOL
