I'm looking for a spare box. Chrome boxes are 'no longer available' (the 'not for a lot of under 3000rpm' app note on that box makes it not a good fit anyway), orange boxes seem to be made by all sorts of unknowns and are therefore an 'unknown' I'm not interested in.

I see a unit made by 'HyRev' that is available for a reasonable price. It's listed as being good to 7500rpm.

This box is for my 40+ year old pet Duster. I don't race it anymore, but it does see 7000rpm once in awhile just for fun.

Is anyone here familiar with the brand that might say it's a worthwhile box? Or not?

Thanks.

In my opinion (and it’s worth every penny you have paid for it) I don’t think there is a lot of difference for the street guy. Maybe all these different color boxes were unique back in the seventies, but ignition electronics have advanced to a point where this stuff is a commodity. Most of it is made overseas anyway. For $19 you can run the experiment & see if the Walmart version works for you.

If you’re slapping in a new box I’d buy the Hirev 7500 from Jegs. Its made in the USA and is comparable to the chrome box. I have one with the whole jegs kit in my Coronet, it runs great. Its probably better than the original chrome due to the fact its newer with newer components.

Go with the HHR688 combo from this guy. FBO Performance Ignition for all Makes, Muscle Cars, Street Rods, Race Engines. Specializing in Mopar Ignition Products, Distributors to Computer control ECU's. Home of the HRR688
The owner operator is a Mopar guy that races a Barracuda.
I use some of his stuff quite a bit, and right now they are having this combination sale that is really good.
7k is no problem for this box and it's half the size of the OE Mopar box.
It has a built in digital rev limiter, plugs right into the OE harness and is made in the USA.

I run the Hirev chrome box from Rich Ehrenberg(the guy from Mopar Action Magazine) -he has stuff on eBay it seems just fine to me but I am always looking for the next better new thing !

Hey, Thanks much, I seen on a B-body site where this combination made 17 hp more than a MSD 6AL2 all across the powerband on a 496 inch RB engine, I was trying to remember who made this set up.

FBO has been around for a while and his ignition is rated pretty good. Plus he stands behind it, not a corporate firewall when it comes to support.

You are welcome.
They also have a "Tuning To Win" book that people swear by, and they also do distributor tuning that I have seen make big differences in time slips.
I have even seen where people gave a copy of their book to someone else, and then sent FBO payment as if they just bought one from them.
Where else do we see that kind of loyalty to a product and company that produced it?
When people have problems or questions Don (the owner) either answers the call or calls them back personally.

I have no stake at all in the company, but due to what I do I have had the pleasure of dealing with them personally on multiple occasions.

Don used to sell Demon carbs and would send you Demon jets for your old Holley jets for free. I think he got out because the QC was going downhill fast. I think I met him about 5 years ago at a spring Fling at his table. If it was him, he was a nice guy.

is there a way to add a 2 step rev limiter ? I have a 4 speed .

If you are referring to FBO products Don told me the last time I talked to him that they had a 2 step in the manufacturing process.

If the question was random about adding a two step, there are stand alone two steps out there in the aftermarket, though I'm not sure why a car with a four speed would need one.

You set one for launch rpms and the second one for shift point.

It was the FBO unit I was asking about.

What are the advantages of the FBO over a MSD 6al again ?

Ah, ok that makes sense.
The FBO stuff is made in the USA, great warrantee and promotes another Mopar related business.
Plus that 200 sale they are having is a heck of a deal.
Plus the box they have plugs directly into an unmodded Mopar factory harness.
It's a good option for cars with an OE electronic distributor that just need a better ignition system without having to do electrical mods.

Rev-n-nator is very good to use. If you do not mind spending a few dollars. I put one on my 79 300 and it runs great with the swap from the lean burn system.

So is this a better set up than my MSD distribuator and AL 6?

Not having compared the two side by side I can't say if one is better than the other.
I would think if Don (the owner of FBO) wins race meets with it, it can't be a bad thing.

The Mopar boxes all retard timing at high RPM, with the exception of the Gold Box. and those are a beeotch to find. That can be useful to prevent detonation, but if you're running race gas or you have a pump gas engine, that retard feature.......is retarded.

Standard Ignition #LX101 is a great piece that does not have the timing retard feature. They are all over Ebay at good prices. O'Reilly is also fixin to start carrying Standard ignition in all stores. The change over will be done by the end of the year. We are changing from BWD (Borg Warner Division) to Standard. We will even carry the once defunct Blue Streak line from what I understand.

Good luck!

Mopar box retard timing? Are you talking Chrome box too. Explain? I run my car at full mechanic advance, once it set, my timing never moves thru the RPM range when racing.

I got the LX101 from SMP for $11 CDN from Rock Auto. I ordered 2.
Almost matches color of cuda lol.
Glad ya heard good about them Rob!
