.......about engine noises. But before I start tearing things apart, maybe someone else has had this noise.
I got into the car hard the other day (1st, 2nd and 3rd manual) and after I shut it down and stopped at a light I heard a knocking. Not a hard knock, but something lighter, associated with engine rpm, faster I rev faster the knock.
So I stop, raise the hood and listen. I comes from the upper r/s of the motor and it is like a squealing/tapping sound.
Oil is level and clean. No overheating. 93 Oct gas.
I might try a video/audio clip later. It is a 380hp Magnum crate engine. Bout 8K on it. And yes it was warm when I punched it. Actually had driven it 10 miles before I gassed it and started hearing the noise.
Any input is certainly appreciated guys.

I'd try to pin the noise location down with a stethoscope or stick before tearing in.

Snatch the valve cover off. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Take your belt/belts off and run it for a minute just for grins. That will eliminate anything in the front.

I could be crazy, but it sounds like something rotational to me, judging by the squeal.

Maybe it's just me, but it seemed to get a bit louder as you moved the camera from the rear toward the front.

I can to the same conclusion after I made the video. Maybe the water pump.

Could be the water pump, alternator, don't know until you investigate.

If you have a stick, think a piece of broomstick, that you can put one end on the alternator and the other right up against your ear, that will tell you in short order.

Or a long screwdriver.

The lifters on these engines are notoriously noisy, especially with a rowdy cam, mine do it too. I'd replace them, mine need it sooner or later. I added a quart of 20w-50 on top of my 10w30 and it quieted right down.

You could try a quart of ATF to clean everything out, see if that helps.

20W-50 is in the engine now, removed PS and ALT belts, noise still there, used screwdriver and a piece of heater hose. Noise appears to come from near the rear r/s of engine. Lifter area is my guess.

Compression test on 6 and 8 pull the cover as Rusty say's.

I had an ear on my flex plate crack about ten years ago, it was knocking and I was going to pull the engine and found the one tab came off with the flex plate bolt. May be worth pulling the inspection cover.

4 speed, not auto.

My tentative plans are to replace the rockers, push rods and lifters to hopefully solve the noise issue.

I have my fingers crossed that it isn't a bad cam bearing. And I need to take a good look at all the valve springs too.

So...........whats wrong with this pic?

I see a lifter retainer is missing (if thats what it is called )

Was the hold down spider missing too? Did you find the missing dog bone?

Whoops.

Spider was intact, dog bone was missing. I cannot believe Mopar would let a crate engine out like this. I tend to think the previous owner was a liar.

That's a shame. It's going to have to completely apart and go to the shop to get all that out.

The one silver lining is......when you get done, it will be right and you will KNOW what you have. I sure wish you were local. You could bring it over and we'd fix it right up.

That's sucks! Used to hear lots of horror stories of MP crate motors put together missing parts. One I recall was a forgotten rod bearing in a 360 crate.
