Just pulled my /6 out of my 1970 dart. My dad is giving me his 360 out of a 77 power wagon with 110k on it. So question is.....do I rebuild the 360 or just re-gasket with out heads off and put it in or rebuild it. I am trying to make this a daily driver and have my wife drive it also. Second question.....904 or 727. The 360 has a street cam and dual plane intake...what's your guy's opinion?

If you can afford it rebuild,do it once and be done with it,also you will need a 360 center sump pan.

Rebuild it , I say 727 , but that might be some old school prejudice . Had 4 904 transmissions blow up on me , after I put in a 727 never had a problem . Though I hear the have improved 904 kits , but 727 is still hard to beat .

there are 904's in the 9's...

but stock vs stock the 727 is stronger...

I think I am just going to rebuild it and get a 727. Do it once so I can drive thing! Thanks for the input

Unless you are also swapping out the rear end there is no need to go with the 727.

But if you aren't putting in a heavier rear, you probably will be eventually.

Unless you are going to go the the track or pulling a heavy trailer go with the 904.
I have heard you will get better gas mileage with the 904.

If I get a 904. Do i need to rebuild it a special way? If i rebuild it wouldn't it be better to rebuild a 727 for "resale" later on. My first dart i had put in the Magnum 360 motor so it was an easy decision for the 727.

And there are 7 sec powerglides , still prefer a 727 0ver a 904 . 904 needs a serious rebuild to stand up to a good 360 , the 727 will do it stock . I have yet to blow a 727 , had one in a 650 HP 440 that took a beating for over 150,000 miles , my 1971 340 clone lasted over 90,000 miles and 6 years with 727 , 10,000 miles and went through 4 904 with coolers and shift kits .
904 might be better these days ,but it is not as strong as a 727 without major improvements
For blasts up the track the weight savings of 904 might pay off , for a a street car that is driven often the 727 is a better stronger choice , I M O .
Which transmission is easier to find these days ?

And change the dif for sure ! Those 7 1/4 are weak , the torque of your 360 will have it spitting teeth , went through many of those before I wised up and put in an 8 3/4 . 8 1/4 might be good enough , depending on what is available , no experience with 8 1/4 . I know the 8 3/4 is a super tough , easy to change gears dif .
Good luck !

I already put a 8.25 in the rear with a sure rip. I traded a kid my 7.25 and 250.00 for it. I was mainly trying to get the bbp because I have willwoods up front. I found a stock 27 for a 150.00. I think this is going to be the easiest. Thanks again

yeah, I agree with the 727 in your case. In a light car like a dart, the milage difference will be negligable. With the 360 and the 904 combo, youd better have an extra trans as a spare.
(you probably wont be able to keep your "foot" out of it: its gonna be fun!) thats why the 727 will be a better choice; more peace of mind.
