You have to be just a little bit crazy perhaps? Most of us are even if we don't want to admit it.
I tried it when I was about 19, but after carrying some 60 bundles of shingles to the roof of a 2 1/2 storey house on ladders one day I decided that it wasnt for me. My phone rang for about an hour the next day, multiple messages asking if I was going to work or not, but I couldn't get out of bed to answer it. Lol I am obviously not crazy enough to be a roofer.:realcrazy:

Well, I only need 32 bundles, and only one story
But yeah, I wouldn't want to do this nonsense for a living

I worked for a few hours last nite, and a few this morning...and I only got 1 square done
Granted, that did include 80 feet of the new construction, so that involved underlayment, drip rail and a LOT of calculations to make sure the first row of the existing roof matches with the 25th row of the new roof

Its about noon new, and it's getting too hot for me to keep messing with it

I'll put in some more time once the shade kicks in

Looks pretty decent for a novice

You didn't strip the roof first? I know you can go overtop of the old ones as long as they aren't curled but always makes a nicer job when you strip it.

No, I did not

The shed is one it's first roof, and from what I understand, you can reshingle it at least once

So I just grabbed some larger nails and went to town

(It might have looked better stripped, but I just didn't think it was worth the effort)

Many years ago a guy here in town had a 58 Chev 4 door which he had shortened into a 2 dr. Looked really weird but had a 348 3x2 and a 4 speed. Ugly but fast. I'm talking mid 70's
My first car was a 61 ponch 2 door hard top coming home from buying a complete 348 cross ram a big buck decided to run into the front of my minty 61 ponch car totaled guy I bought engine from nice enough to give me my money back wish I had that car now

And...a few reasons it may needed to be redone

As you can tell, they installed them with a 6 inch rise instead of a 5

That leaves an attractive inch exposed which wasn't supposed to be

And it seems that is where they were worn through each time

That’s an easy one that was done to save shingles 1 in on 12 shingles you save a whole course. Depending on roof size it can add up quick

Now there’s a back seat you could get busy in. Mine was a two door when you layed on the back seat and looked up you could see out the back window as it came up on the roof. Young an stupid let auto pac tell me what to do with car. Never again

Morning guys. Going to be another gorgeous day. Nothing but sunshine right through till Sat. so far. And a long weekend also for the working people.
Have a wonderful day and Happy Hump Day also.

No the problem is it hasn’t really rained here since the snow left. Couple little sprinkles here and there. Hwy. 6 to where my son lives is closed for fire. Ont. sent some needed water bombers the other day. Like I said scared to fart lest I start a fire.

Sounds like our summer last year. Hardly any rain and really hot. A lot of people lost their lawns. Neighbour spent 1200 bucks for sod and it all burned up.
Sounds like another hot Summer here they are saying.

well, lets see, normally, there is 6 courses every 30 inches...this way there is 5
so for every 2.5 feet, you "save" a course

the roof looks like this (the one the right)

upload_2021-5-19_7-36-47.png

the 8x10 section on the left i added, so we wont count that
so we got 2 runs of 9 and 2 runs of 8
that is 34 foot, 408 inches
minus 6 for the first one is 402
402/30=13.4
so 13 courses
those courses run 2x19 and 2x10, so 58 feet
13 times 58 feet, is 754 linear feet
they used 3 tab shingles, so 3 feet wide
754 divided by 3, is 251 shingles
divided by 26 (is it?) shingles per bundle, is still 10 bundles

so i could have save $150 (or $300, if i bought em at lowes)

that doesnt sound like it is worth the effort
although, i paid 600 for all the stuff i needed for both roof, so you would be looking at a 20% savings if you cut corners like this

doesnt sound worth it to me

but i will admit, my back would be happy to hear that is 600 pounds of shingles i wont have to haul up a ladder

True however if your in the business $150 bucks a day nice little side gig

untill a homeowner or inspector gets up there and makes you rip it off and redo it because im pretty sure this voids their warranty

Oh no doubt but being in the construction industry my whole life I’ve seen and fixed some pretty amazing or maybe stupid stuff.

its funny
as a non roofer, ive been watching a few you tube videos on the subject and it didnt take long untill i got sidetracked watching "worst roof inspections" videos

but since i got your attention, i want to do a "closed valley"
Screen-Shot-2019-05-10-at-4.50.08-AM-copy-1.png

(ignore the arrows)

from all the videos ive watched, this seems to be the "easiest" way to do it as a novice
BUT none of the videos ive seen used 3 tab shingles

is this a coincidence or can i not do this with a 3 tab?

oh, and im not worried about the code on a shed

Either is fine just run one side long use roofing cement on the cut side and valley flashing under both.
