Hi
well another problem shows up in the old 74 Dart
the dash cig lighter is not working. now its not the electrical has voltage
but what causes the element to stop working and can it be repaired.
If not, is anyone making a replacmement, I guess I could buy a new one.
But anyone know why the element goes bad?
Best

Unless you're trying for a 100 point car, the most cost effective, and best use of time, is to replace the element and socket. Parts can be found in the "HELP!" section of most big box parts stores. It is pretty much a generic fixture, but make sure you don't get one for an import. Some of the earlier imported cars had a cigarette lighter that was a little smaller in diameter than the domestics use.

Elements fail through fatigue of wire resulting from cycles of heating and cooling.

It can go bad because of loss of continuity and/or degradation of the heating element itself. (looks intact, but no continuity)
They are pretty much all the same as far as an actual lighter goes, so pulling one or two out of a wrecking yard worked well whenever I needed one.

sorry guys, the first voltage reading showed 12\13 volts today I double checked
and its only 4 volts at the hot wire.
My Haynes book does not even show the lighter, or any wiring for it.
I don't even know if it runs through the fuse panel or a fuse-able link or
circuit breaker

I know it goes through the fuse panel and the manual 6pk provided should show you.
Heck if ya wanted you could even connect the power supply for it to the amp meter with it's own inline fuse and you wouldn't need the key on to use it.

My car was already connected to full time power (factory), but not sure they all are, or were.
I like my stereo and lighter to be usable without the keys in it.

Cudajam,
I guess you have a CA med card! I moved out right before I was eligible!!! My roach burner on the 74 is full time power. Great name for the lighter though.
