Looking for recommendations for Cuba Resort

-
Some friends complained about shortages of liquor and food in Cuba. I have no desire to go there or Mexico for that matter. We love Kawai but it’s awfully expensive these days.

I went to Cuba right when Castro got sick. I went to see the architecture and a place that time had not touched for (50?) years. A look into a system that in my opinion doesn’t work but a veiw of a people that are as tough as nails.

I saw the remaining members of Buena Vista Social Club.

I saw renditions of the Salsa of the young and old.

I saw the nervous look of patrons at a bar when a bartender spoke his true feelings about the gov’t to us while have rum.

I rode a donkey to a farm and drank rum from a coconut while puffing a a honey dipped cigar.

If you want to wander around a resort thinking about the next dip in the pool, maybe Cuba isn’t the place to go.

Seeing a cot and a lightbulb on marble floors inside 13’ wooden doors with laundry hanging and a well used bicycle (unlocked) leaning up outside, that’s the stuff I went to see and experience.

You want chicken cordon bleu? You get ham on a bun.

It’s been awhile, but i would be very interested in your experience Steve. It felt very safe in my opinion. Maybe the natives are restless and more amped up? Please report when you are back.

Is Cube safe ? What the crime like now ? I ask in all sincerity.

Zero issues when I went in 08. The resort Bella Costa in Varadero was "out of the way" but on beach with a couple pools. Havana was approx 1 1/2-2 hours away.
There was a small market/town approx a 5-10 minute scooter ride away. I checked out also. For me I'm "nervous" any time I've been outside of Canuckistan. Mind my p's and q's.

Forgot to update this thread, but Cuba is DEFINITELY OUT!! No power, followed by a hurricane and most reviews are horrible lol.
So Dominican? Mexico?
Lori wants to do ZERO excursions. Myself I would like to have a day of deep sea fishing.

Look into Tortola, or any British Virgin Islands.
Spent a lotta time there in the 80s sailing, sunning, and you should find some fishing too.
Can't speak for today, but it was really laid back, taxi guy brought my brother-inlaws wallet to him, thru about four other folks.
He left it in a bar one nite on another island, everything was still there including cash.
Hope it's as it was, but . . .
Good hunting

I think we visited the Bahamas over Christmas to New Years for under $2g’s. We booked last minute. Prolly get a direct flight too.

Keep us posted where you end up!

Well thanks all! We decided on Dominican Republic.
Started to really sweat waiting for our passports as Canada Post is on strike and Passport Canada was losing their minds with all the passports backed up for delivery. I wasnt sweating too bad, but the female side was getting stressed, and that **** rolled downhill :BangHead: :mob:Took several phone calls to them and they were all super polite every time, but kept getting a "wait and see". Well enough of that we called our MP's office and she was on it like white on rice.
Passports showed up today via Purolator and that is what the MP's office said would happen. Kudos and thank you to Michelle Ferrieri!
Rectifying that problem saved us MULTIPLE problems.
Anyway, here is where we're going. Better be fishing!

What part of the DM you going Steve ? Puna Cana on the north shore, full of resorts , South side is Santo Domingo the Capital . Full of history, "Oldest City in the New World"
As in Christopher Columbus !

@4spdragtop I was in the Dominican a few years back, Punta Cana to be exact, the Grand Bavaro Princess resort, nicest resort Ive ever been on, hopefully your experience is the same! Glad to hear the MP helped you with your passports, many people dont realize that they can go to their MP's office when having trouble with the government.

Good for you! Enjoy yourselves.
The Christmas that we went to Turks and Caicos, we used one of the house plants in the place as a Christmas tree. The ornaments were whatever we could find laying around.

P.S. Screw Cuba

lol! We’re on a boat that will be in Punta Cana on the EDIT! I think we will be well south of you tho. I see “beach day” scribbled on the itinerary on Catalina Island.

Looks like all the best reefs are up on that north side however. Snorkeling will be awesome. Have fun

Lol, cool. Be great to share a rum! I think our itinerary is beach day every day lol. As mentioned I'm hoping to get in a fish for an afternoon. Hopefully not too pricey.

My sentiments exactly! I’ve got a couple of feral toddlers tho and wouldn’t wish them on an enemy.

Steve,
If you don't have your heart set on Cuba Puerto Vallarta is very accommodating to tourism. Red and I went there together, and I had been there several times before meeting her. Due to the difference in our dollars, it can be an inexpensive trip by comparison. Fishing there is top notch. You can stay in Banderos Bay and catch Dorado, Rooster fish etc or go out a bit further into the Pacific and catch big. We caught several sail fish and a 275 lb yellow fin Tuna. The Tuna was a battle as they are so tall and thin. When they get sideways to the boat it's like trying to reel in a freakin' Volkswagen. The food is top shelf and there is plenty to do. We took a jeep to the set of the original Arnold Swartzenegger Predator movie. There was no one there as it was off season so we had the whole bar to ourselves. There is a nice lagoon there as seen in the movie and the bar owner has a big hemp rope tied to that tree so you can swing out over the lagoon and swim there. Good snorkeling and scuba diving as well. If you ever decide to go let me know and Ill give you a list of all the spots we enjoyed. The Gonzales House and River Cafe were primo for food!
Best Regards,
Jeff and Karrin

Let me run this by ya. Fly down here to S E Texas, we have a spare bedroom we rent out for $300/nite including dinner (supper). Breakfast is extra. Will rent ya a classic for $200/day. You buy the gas.
Weather is warm and wet. Wife just made a big pot of Taco soup, and it will last us all well past Christmas.
What ya say!!?????????????/

If I recall correctly, the DR is regular peso, and the tourist "convertible" peso in Cuba that you are wondering about has been discontinued as well.
