Match Race ~ 1970 'Duster 340' vs. 1969 Mustang 'Mach 1' 351W

-
I like these threads that 69 Cuda 440 starts. Since I was around in those days rarely did you see a car rated with way more horsepower beat a car with less horsepower. It was how that power was put to the ground. For some reason Fords just didn't run well out of the box. The very first engine I built was a friends 302 in a 68 Mustang California Special. But time after time my 340/Hedman header equipped 71 Challenger would just wup *** on that thing. I think one of the fastest cars I remember was the 71 Corvette with the LT1 350 engine with a 4sp. Followed closely by this ungodly sounding 70 Canary Yellow Dart 340. After that everything else is a blur. Good times they were.

How would the Mach 1 stack up against the 383 68 roadrunner??
laughable. By top of 2nd gear the RR would be three car lengths ahead. The only Mustang that was worth anything was the 71 Mach 1. And since this is an A body only site I will say this. Back then you didn't see A bodies too much on the street. Even though their performance was great off the lot most folks went for B bodies or Chevelles or Camaros. Of course there were a few exceptions. I didn't buy my 1st A body until 1976. A 1970 Swinger 340. White/white interior/black vinyl roof/4sp/black tail stripe. I have been hooked ever since.

Oh...one more thing that emerged from the fog from my brain about that time. 1970. No one liked lining up against the 'new' 1970 Duster 340. It was the only A body I remember seeing a few of at the drag strips here in So Cal. We had a lot drag strips back then.

Just a little curious, what was the duster's f/r weight distribution? Was it any better than the mustang?

Hold on there Phil,

The 'Shaker Hood' was available for $84.25, as an option on both the 1969
Mustang Mach 1 with the >
* 351W 290 HP {4-Barrel}
* 390/320 HP

It is 'clearly' printed in the Sales Brochure, stating that the Shaker 'functional'
Hood Scoop is available as an option on the Mach 1 with either the >

* 351W 290 HP {M-Code}
* 390/320 HP {S-Code}

Could be in the sale brochures but none was built. Wasn't avalaible on Boss 302 either.

Those Windsors couldn't breathe. Some of the worst exhaust ports in history. I have one of those intake manifolds. It puts the carb down between the valve covers.

My best friend in high school had a Shelby GT 350 with the 351 Windsor , was a dog until we changed the intake ,headers , cam , pistons and worked the heads then it was a killer . Another weak spot was the fmx transmission , but that was rebuilt into a strong unit . After all the work it would beat big blocks .

1969 Ford Mustang 'Mach 1'

'Shaker Scoop' markings.

The 428 had a 'Cobra Jet' emblem on each side of the scoop.

The 390 had a '390' emblem on each side of the scoop.

The 351W had no markings on the scoop.

There was a local old dude retired from Georgia Power and Ford. He had a low mileage (less than 40K) 69 Mustang with a 428. That car was all original. It had a shaker hood.

Great thread! My grandfather bought a new 1970 Mach 1 in grabber blue, gorgeous car but it had a 351C 2bbl and FMX and single exhaust. My grandmother raced him home from work in her 1971 307 Chevelle and he could not keep up to her LOL. I hate to think what my Duster would have done to it.
