Metal in oil

Look closer. There's a smaller inner spring on the inside of the dampers.

Yup, I see them now.

I take that shitty little wire damper out. All they do is eat retainers and fill the engine with dirt.

So it’s a double with a damper. It must be a cheap spring otherwise they’d be way too much for what the OP is doing.

Or replace that spring with a good single spring.

Looks like a quality build, ARP bolts all marked after torqued. 12 pt. intake bolts, viton valve seals.
Shine a light in on dampers, see if they appear to be rubbing?

Dampers definitely appear to be rubbing on the inside of the outer spring.
****.
Never messed with springs.
Maybe I’ll leave and just do magnets for now until I can get it to someone who knows what the heck they’re doin.
Al least I feel better that Y’all helped me find source.
Appreciate all the wisdom here.

Looking at pictures on this phone sucks lol.

I looked pretty close at the pictures and still missed it.

Sucks getting old.
It's ok. It took me a second, too. I had to decide whether or not I was seeing a shadow......it's not. They're dual sprAngs with a damper.

wether you're a fan or not, truth is, pot holder magnets work period!!!! springs and dampners are the biggest trash makers in an engine. put them in and see . i'm not b## sh##ting any one, they flat work,

I've not seen anyone argue the point.

For sure gonna do it.
Thanks so much for great advice … now just wanna make sure placement is correct

Did you check the position of the rocker shafts?

I did on the drivers side and couldn’t get a good picture… but yes, there is a “slot/hole” where you said … front and pointing toward engine

And the passenger's side?

Haven’t pulled that valve cover yet, but will tomorrow , to inspect and add magnets.
Started cleaning Bulkhead Connectors then ran out of time .
Definitely a “ slot / hole” where you said on drivers side.
Will be first thing I look for on passenger side tomorrow

Good. That means hopefully it's right on the passenger's side.

I have to. If I go get my eyes checked when she tells me she wins lol.

I have to give it a week or two so it looks like my idea.
Stop bein stupid and get your eyes checked. Take it from somebody who has lost one. They're pretty important.

Should I go ahead and send you a white tipped cane?

Ok. Pics of passengers side
Looks clean like other side
No metal debris inside valve cover.
Slot/ hole on bottom on bottom of rocker shaft in rear ( firewall side) like you said.
Same deal with dampers …
Rod clearances definitely OK

Looks like plenty of oil is gettin to the top too.

With shafts off that would give you opportunity to inspect springs etc. One thing tho, the factory service manual is WRONG with rocker shaft hold down bolt torque. I think FSM states 30 lb/ft, it SHOULD be 15lb/ft. Someone else please confirm this(I'm wrong lots lol)

Yeah, I think it's like 15-17. There's a range. I just forget exactly what it is. 15 would be fine. I agree with removing the rocker shafts. That way, he could 100% inspect the pushrods for contact. Sometimes you cannot see it without disassembly.
