Mig Welder

Take your time, a series of short tack welds and a shot of compressed air to cool works well. Good to blow out fires as well. Might be a good idea to pull tank and cap lines for safety.

Thanks! The car is on a rotisserie and is everything is pulled off. I am feeling pretty good, technique wise, I just need to setup the welder properly. I can weld pretty darn good with the flux core, but never tried anything as thin as body panels.

Well, if you switch to .023 and add the gas, check your polarity and practice a little, i think you will suprise yourself. I found flux core a nuisance to weld with. Bet you wont want to go back.

Since I got the welder used, it wasn't setup correctly. I am not sure what is going on, but it has .023 wire in it, but the tip is a .030 and I am not certain the correct roller is in there. I have to check that.

But I otherwise have everything else. I am hoping to get all that sorted here shortly, so I can practice. The flux core I have been welding with is a lincoln quik weld and only does flux.

gas will give cleaner welds, easier to weld thin sheetmetal with the .023, I just finshed lower qtr patches among others with .030 flux wire, It cleaned it up good and i treated welds with ospho, all came out great, BUT I was doing this OUTSIDE in the breeze! ha yes you will like using the .023 and gas way better.
not a pro but have welded for 50 years.

The roller in the machine has two grooves in it. it is probably on the larger one right now. Take out the phillips screw and flip it over so the wire rides in the smaller groove. You will need to get the correct .023-.025 tips ad having the .030 will make it want to arc to the tip instead of the metal and it will hang up and just be a total pain in the butt. Set it so the polarity is positive to the gun block and stat with a E 3 or F 4 setting on the dials.

I will say I have had welders tell me to use 1 size larger tip, works better for me. seems like it does not foul my tip as fast. never tried the non spatter spray.

Thanks! I am going to check that all this weekend. It is amazing to me how much more goes into the setup of the machine then the actual technique. Been learning alot from reading.

Very true. Use to know an old guy that worked for Lincoln forever. He always said he could teach a monkey to pass a weld certification test in a couple hours because it was 90% settings and set up.
