My search for a shorty D100 is over

-
Had a few hours today to work on the D. Finished stripping the last few painted black items I wanted back to chrome, pulled the seat and took it to my interior guy for the scotch tartan treatment (you’ll see what I mean later), found the original jack, handle, and wrench under the seat, that was cool. Started treating the rust in the floor boards to get an idea how much I need to cut out. Sadly the replacement floor pans that I got with the truck are junk and I won’t use them. I might cut them up and use the flat portions as patches but if I need a whole pan I’m buying new. Pics from today.

Looking good. I would put a gas tank underneath like the later ones. I seen too many of them in the cab leak gas inside clear up to the front floor

I'd do both. Tank in cab and underneath
You can get the tank coated, to prevent leaking.
Yeah I had that leak happen to my old 78 d300. I sent it in and had it repaired and coated. No more problems

I have the stock tank from my 63 falcon (same as mustang) and it’s in wonderful shape, and the sender works with the mopar gauge. I’ve already investigated what the “go to” frame mounted tank is and the mustang is one of the options. Mine doesn’t leak at all, it’s got all new lines and clamps and a new sending unit and there are zero gas smells inside. I think that’s short lived though as they all do those things eventually.

So today was a good day, despite nearly breaking my wrist, twice, electrocuting myself, and destroying one of my favorite 1/2” electric drills all in the span of about 10 minutes, (yes there’s pics). If you’ve ever drilled a 3/4” hole in steel with a brand new drill bit, and a powerful drill you know where I’m going with this. “Just drill the lower control arm mount brackets” they said, “it’s easy” they said. Nope. My good buddy Chris, @Turbo440Dart and I decided to tackle lowering my D100 today because we both had nothing better to do than lay on cold concrete and let some blood run out of our knuckles, and become what we now consider ourselves, professional D100 lower’ers. We know exactly what not to do. So if you need your truck lowered just ask and we’ll help you find someone who’s never done it. I digress.
We started about 10am and had the whole front apart by about 10:20 and thought we were cruisin right along. By 1:00 our hands were bleeding and after fighting us at every step along the way the front was done and back together. Dropped it off the jack stands and both of us stood back and agreed, the fight was worth it. After a quick lunch it was on to the rear. Just a normal axle flip with new perches and thankfully this truck is so nice that everything came apart super easy and went back together in the same way and the rear only took us an hour and a half or so. I decided that we weren’t going to set pinion angle and weld the perches today and that bit us in the *** because once we had everything back together and wanted to see our handiwork we rolled the truck out of my shop and I touch the gas and let the clutch out and the pumpkin rotated up and smacked the bed floor and locked up the u joint. ****. Luckily lifting with the floor jack on the nose of the diff rotated it back to non U joint killing territory and back in the shop it went after we took some pics. Remember when I said it was a good day? It was and I meant it because in my opinion the only thing cooler than a short wide Dodge is a lowered short wide Dodge and we succeeded. It’s 3” lower front and back and has just enough of the hood rat look I was after. The truck is far from perfect but today we made it perfect’er. Thanks for the help Chris.

Man that looks good! Ya know they make handles that mount by the chuck on the drill to help hold it right?

I have the same drill and got picked up in the air drilling my Ram frame with a hole saw. Was welding in bushings for my rocker guards so the frame wouldn’t collapse when I tightened the bolts down.

You gonna have enough ground clearance for the turbo piping with it sitting that low :p

Yea I have the handle that came with the drill but just didn’t have it on there. I can’t believe the molded handle broke when the bit locked up. I seriously thought my wrist was broken.

Yeah, those things grab hard.

I broke the case like that on my smaller 18V Dewalt drill when a larger bit stuck while drilling. Was only a couple of years old and really surprised the case failed. The big one is still going strong, however it know it will break my hands before it will stall…

I feel like enough time has passed I can now laugh to my hearts desire about that thing almost sending you into orbit. 7/10, tell the boss he needs a heated work space.

You earned the right to laugh and not have to let time pass.

The heated work space will never happen. There are 6, 8 foot diameter fans in the roof making heating an exercise in futility. We recycle the air in the building every 30 minutes.

man i was there in august and nearly needed a sweatshirt, i can't even imagine how bone chilling it musta been today!

That makes my wrists hurt just thinking about it. My dad had an old gear driven Dayton 90 degree drill that got me a couple times breaking through thick steel.

Funny reading. I can't tell you how many times I tweaked my wrist, smacked my knuckles, and hit my head, and said "Why am I working on these fkn dinosaurs again"? Funny stuff. :)

Looks good! I forget, what are the plans for the wheels, paint and drivetrain?
Plans? Ha! You think I plan any of this stuff? Ok that’s mostly a joke but not really. I don’t really have a plan for the D as I shouldn’t be working on it right now because I have 2 other cars to finish. But I just like it so much and have wanted one for so long I can’t help myself. I’ve had a picture in my head of a lowered short wide D100 and I’ll just keep moving towards that. I’ll probably never paint another vehicle in my life so the paint is what it is. Maybe polish it up and clear it, that’s all. For wheels anything is possible because they’re easy but for now the cop wheels can stay, they might get painted to match the interior. Drivetrain plans are wildly up in the air, everything from a twin turbo W2 small block magnum to a nitrous small block magnum, to keeping the slant 6 is currently on the table. For now the slanter gets it moving so it stays. I guess stay tuned and we’ll all find out together.

Would be sweet to see you do the Dodge version of this high revver. Looks like a lot of fun.
