Hey All,

I just turned out some bronze brake and clutch pedal bushings for myself and another FABO member. I did post a bit of this in an older thread, but I thought you all might find the process interesting so I'm starting a new thread for it. These bushings are a massive upgrade compared to the plastic mopar originals and will last the life of the car. They give a wonderful smooth pedal feel too!

Normally I would chuck up some bronze bar and have at it. In this case since I wanted to make more than one set (and if there is a market for them, more in the future) so I decided to make a few mandrels that would make work holding and repeatability easier. This necessitated cutting the bronze up into bushing length stubs and reaming (in the case of the clutch bushing) or boring (in the case of the brake bushing) the correct ID.

I was able to get a 1/2 inch mandrel which fit the ID of the clutch bushing, but I couldn't find one for the .810/.812 bore of the brake bushing. So I bought a 1 inch mandrel for the brake bushing that I could modify to fit the ID of the bushing and the 1/2 in (max size) collet in the headstock of my lathe.

1st pic is of the unaltered 1 inch collet
2nd it is set up for some cutting
3rd the 1/2 shank for the lathe collet has been cut
4th it is mounted in the lathe to cut down to .810

Next I made collars for each of the mandrels to serve as depth stops. This gives a positive stop to rest the slug against when facing the part to length. It also helps to resist the forward force put on the slug by the cutting tool when turning the part to the correct OD.

1st pic is the finished mandrels. 1/2 inch for the clutch bushes and .810 for the brake bushes.
2nd pic, they are both fitted with the collars
3rd pic shows the mandrels with finished bushings on them

The next three pictures are the bushings in their respective locations on the pedals and in the pedal assembly.

If you would like to make your own set and have any questions I can help with, I'd be happy to. If you would like a set of bushings from me, I'd be happy to help you with that too!

I understand there are about 3 different sized brake/clutch pedal setups. This particular set up is out of a 1967 Dart (going into my 68 Valiant). If you have one of the other sized set ups I'd still be happy to help out. Just send me a PM and we'll figure it out!

Best,

Chris E.

PS. I am charging $30+ shipping per pair for either the brake or clutch bushings alone. A full set of brake & clutch bushings toegether (4 pc) is $60+shipping. And yes please add that pesky 3% for paypal. Thanks!

Hey All,

One member wants to buy a set for is 67 Dart, Auto trans car. Can anyone confirm the ID and OD of the brake bushes in a auto trans car?

I'm pretty sure they are the same as the manual trans cars of that year, but just want to confirm.

I'm also pretty sure I have a auto trans pedal set up out in the shed but don't want to have to dig a path through sloppy snow to get there :banghead: :)

Looks fantastic. I am a ways off from needing those yet, but I might go check my stuff and get a set ordered while it's still an option.
I would love to be able to make something like that myself, but its been years since I've touched a lathe, nor do I have access to one.

I purchased a complete set of these bushings from Chris and they look awesome ...I'm looking forward to no sqeeky sloppy clutch and brake pedals...in my opinion it is money well spent ..

Chris, these are great. I am so glad you are willing to make these. I test fitted them on my clutch pedal, and brake pedal. I have no doubt that these are far superior to the nylon split bushing. Also using these for the clutch pedal pivot is way better than the nylon,

as a historical note the 340, 383, and 440 stick shift cars used a different set of pedals, different diameter pivot pins and pedal torque box. This was because they used needle bearing races because of heavy clutches.

Since those heavy duty needle bearing pedal setups are pretty rare these days, utilizing bronze bushings in place of the stock nylon bushings on the common light duty pedal setups essentially makes em into a heavy duty setup.

For what you would pay for stock nylon split bushings, and believe me, ya gotta hunt to find em. The ones for the brake pedal are the easiest to find, but pricey at $20 a pair for plastic, the clutch ones are harder to find and more expensive because i dont believe anyone makes em repop, i think i priced out the brake pedal and clutch pedal ones where i was able to find em on ebay and was at $45-$50 for nylon plastic !!!!

I even checked brewers performance. They dont even sell the nylon clutch bushing. They do however sell the needle bearing races which will not work on light duty pedal assemblies due to the above mentioned different shaft diameters.

Chris charges a little bit more than what you pay for cheap plastic at $30 per pair its only $10 more than the cheap plastic ones if you can find em, but what you get is a total work of art, that will last your lifetime.

If you put in a set of Chris's bronse beauties, you will never worry about messing with em again, plus get an upgrade to making your clutch pivot point to heavy duty for them beefy clutches.

Hey Chris, these things are legit. Thanks again! Got mine in and the fit was perfect. Obviously, the pedal isn't as nice to look at as the piece of art posted above, but here are a couple pictures. Excuse the fuzzy pictures- damn shaky hands.

I am new to this message board and am also new to A Body Mopars. Had a '68 Road Runner back in the day. Am now beginning work on '74 Duster conversion to 440-4 speed. Am interested in some bronze clutch and brake bushing but haven't figured out how to send personal message to ValiantOne Any help would be appreciated.

Got the second set of brake pedal only bushings from Chris. These will be for a 69 notchback future project for me and my son. The others i bought fit perfectly. These i just put in a box of new and nice used parts for the 69 notch project. I have no doubt these will fit perfectly.

Hey mopowers, what are those funky looking "star" washers/nuts? I stumbled across a few in my bolt bin and wasnt sure what they are for?
Thanks
Steve

I believe you are talking about what goes on the steering column studs before the nuts.
They go against the plastic "H" things that allow the column to collapse in a wreck.
(The nuts have some slight indentations in them to prevent loosening. )

I would like some bushings as well.
Someone should make them.

Thanks guys, I guess the design is so they kinda grab into the mesh of the steering column?

Sure - adriver was correct. They are for attaching the steering column.
