Now I did in fact search through here to see what everyone is paying to install one of these babies in their A body, but failed to find a 100% clear answer.

I have the ability to pick up a 5.7 hemi motor and tranny from a 05 ram for super cheap and I want to know if it's worth digging in to.

My goal would be to keep the factory fuel injection and pcm but run an older small block 727.

Has someone come up with a TOTAL price list for all parts needed to install one of these?

I am interested in the price for all the parts not including the motor/tranny.

Hard to place an exact number , everyone has different ideas on how they want it done. I just placed an order for over $500 just for things to hook the AC from the compressor to the vintage air box. Some guys don't want ac, power steering, engine dress up things etc.

Here is a link to modern muscle, they have a lot of experience in hemi swaps, there is some things you can find cheaper. But gives you an idea on a lot of popular options on swap parts. Its not cheap

We have a discussion on this very same topic going on the book of faces:

G3 Hemi Swap Public Group | Facebook

Lets discuss the cheapest possible RUNNING 5.7 swap into an A-B-E body with only bolt in parts and only the simplest of cutting and grinding.
Let's assume the person doing the swap has only basic tools. No welder, no torch or plasma cutter. Just a grinder and some air tools. Probably a cherry picker and Jack stands ETC.
Let us also assume this person already has a good complete core 5.7 with accessories but no harness or ecu. (Just to make it simple since core prices can vary widely)
The swapper also has a rolling unibody with stock k member and suspension. No engine, trans, radiator or fuel system; Just your basic 318 car ready for a 5.7 Hemi conversion on a bare bones, no frills budget.

What is the real cost to get a 5.7 in and running?

If you would, list the parts with prices and brand. Pics are always helpful. Also please point out any particular issues you have encountered and how you resolved them.

Thanks! I look forward to your replies. I will pin this post so it can be easily found.

Since the above post is almost exactly what I did, I can take a stab at it, though I know I'll forget things.

I got a broken core engine that dropped an intake valve and needed a sleeve. However, I'll just throw out a typical number for a decent working engine of $1500. I think I was probably in ~$1000 between buy the engine, machine work, and a new head.
Swap motor mounts (from TTI), were around $250 I think.
You can use factory log style manifolds with a little work (I didn't, so I added $700 for headers).
I had a 4 speed already, so I bought a conversion flywheel and new clutch (could have reused old clutch, but didn't think it was up for the job) $300 for the flywheel at the time, $200 for the clutch kit

At the most basic, you need motor mounts and a transmission conversion to physically install the engine in your car. Assuming you purchased a fully working engine with electronics, you only need to sort out a fuel system. You could get by with an external high pressure pump and Corvette style filter/regulator combo. I think the filter/regulator was around $60 and the pump probably $200 if I had to take a wild guess (put a carb on mine first, then swapped to Megasquirt fuel injection later).

I know my final tally to have a running carb'd, MSD ignition 5.7 running in my car was under $5000, but I also had to swap power to manual steering, I went to manual brakes (not technically necessary, but more space to work with) and had other parts that weren't strictly necessary.

My best guess at cheapest possible would be $2500 or less. $1500 for engine, $130 for flexplate, $300 for fuel system, $75 for 45 degree oil filter adapter (if you can fit it, I went fully remote with a Summit Kit and block-off plate instead), and the rest for incidentals like radiator hoses, wires, etc. If you have harness and ecu you don't have to pay anyone to strip it down and only use the wires you need, but most people will send it away to get cleaned up at a fairly substantial cost.

The long and short of it is that there really isn't a single low number as it depends what you have in your car already and what you want to keep. If you already have manual steering and a good radiator I bet you could do it for $2500 or less, but most people will want to swap for a better radiator, get headers, go in-tank fuel pump, etc. It can easily add up. I tried to go as cheap as I could because I just wanted a new engine in an old car. I didn't care if it was super pretty or anything, I just wanted to drive it. I didn't get any electronics with mine though, so I had to buy an intake and MSD setup to run the spark, so I was in for $1200 right there.

Im going to start an active list. I know this obviously isn't everything needed, but it's a good start. Everyone please chime in and add to this list. Only necessary things required to install a factory engine out of a pickup that has the computer and wiring.

PARTS ARE WITHOUT THE PURCHASE OF MOTOR/TRANNY
mounts - $250
headers - $700
flywheel - $300
clutch - $200
Oil filter adapter - $75
Fuel pump - $200
Fuel regulator - $60
-----------------------------
~$1785

Feel free to add to this list. I am trying to get a total for someone who would be interested in this swap.

You're trying to reinvent the wheel.
There are over 50 posts detailing what others have spent getting theirs on the road for on that Facebook link I posted.
I don't "do" FB either but it was well worth it to sign up to join that G3 HEMI group.

A "sticky"_application, to this post, could help the forum members some help..Moderators?.....
One of the reasons,I won't just " jump on", the bandwagon: costs...

I've been at this for a few years tossing around the idea of a 408 magnum based stroker or a stock G3 HEMI swap
The costs now are in favor of the G3 swap because it will cost $1,500 just in labor/machine work to have my 408 shortblock built.
tanked/magnafluxed
bored/honed with plates
align hone
square/zero decked
rotating assembly balanced (not including mallory)
assemble everything to be ready to plop on heads

heads I'm looking at some basic EQ off the shelf that's another $1,000
gaskets and stuff $250
I already have the stroker crank and new rods but that kit is about $1,250

We're up to $4k already I'd say $5k all in for a simple 408 build

G3 Swap:
ENGINE:
i'd need the engine $1,500 to $2,000 for a 2013+
I had a line from craigslist for a 2014 with 14k miles out of a 4x4 Ram that still had tranny attached
could have sold the tranny for $500 and only been in the engine for $1,500
Total: $1500

Tranny:
I already have a 46rh to back it I picked that up for $200
But I need a ATI flexplate to go with it so that's another $150
(ATI Flexplates
HEMI - Gen III to 904/727 Trans 5.7L & 6.1L
P/N: 915685
$142.00
)
Total: $500

Computer/EFI controls:
but then I'd need wiring harness $1k from Hotwire
Drive by wire pedal $200 (guesstimate)
computer flashed: $500 but could be $200 or $700, I just took an average
Total: $1750

Fuel system:
Carter 4600HP $115
BC Bronco's fuel accumulator - $70
Walbro GSL392 $110
Wix. 33737 - $40
Fittings, etc - $100
Cheapest EFI fuel system that will handle 600 hp is $435

Exhaust:
You may NEED headers and I think those go for $700
I hope to get away with Jeep SRT8 manifolds for $75
Motor mounts $200
Trans crossmember $150
Total: $500

Grand total: $4,685

I'm sure I'm missing stuff so you can add 20% to that so $5,600
or I'm also inflating stuff in certain areas and if you shopped around longer you could get stuff cheaper (for example that Walbro fuelpump can be had on ebay for $50 if you wait around) so you can cut 20% out of this so say $3,500

that's the range

2014+ G3 are about equivalent in HP/TQ as a "simple" or "tame" 408 w/9.25 compression (uses 87 octane)
To add EFI to a 408 it'll be $1k for that Fi-Tech or go the longer poor mans route and build your own megasquirt

G3 Swap:
ENGINE/Computer/Harness:
might be for an 08/09 over 50k miles. but you'll be able to hear it run in vehicle
Total: $1000

Tranny/Flexplate:
Total: $300

Computer/EFI controls:
figure out your own harness using online PDF wiring diagrams
Drive by wire pedal $200 (guesstimate)
i don't think computer NEEDS to be flashed
Total: $200

Fuel system:
do a simple inline/external fuel pump setup
This item:Walbro GSL392 Fuel Pump $73.32
WIX Filters - 33737 Fuel (Complete In-Line) Filter, Pack of 1 $34.78

Those are amazon.com prices so $105
If you install that Walbro IN the tank you don't need a fuel accumulator or low pressure pump so you can get that cost down to say $100 if you catch a deal on the pump and filter
I've seen that wix filter for $25
and the pump for $50 on various forum classifieds
just gotta keep looking
Cheapest EFI fuel system is $100

Exhaust:
Go with SRT8 manifolds for $50
Roll your own Motor mounts & Trans crossmember $100
Total: $150

Grand total: $2,000

But you'll be waiting to get that motor at that price and you'll need to be pretty handy/crafty in other areas
And that $1,000 motor won't be as fresh (low mileage) as the $2,000 motor
That $2,000 is the best of all worlds from pieces of what I've heard of folks getting things for and also prices I've come across on ebay/craigslist/classifieds

If it was cheap and easy there would be a bunch of Bowtards doing it. I made my own mounts because I can. If you already have a SB that saves money because you only need a different flywheel or flexplate.

Care to share your detailed expenses?

Chevy guys do the LS swap because the base price of a LS motor and the aftermarket parts are so much cheaper than for the HEMI

I'm not going to get into the HEMI vs LS debate
on a pure cost front it's a bit cheaper for the LS guys

But fuel delivery is the same need for both engines

I'm not saying a HEMI swap is "cheap" but it's cheapER than a built 408
of course the 408 will have zero miles and the HEMI have a couple dozen thousand
but who's counting, right?

Leaving the cost of the engine build out, $800 headers, $2000 EFI and laptop, $40 radiator hoses and probably $350 in fuel system. But its at least that much to EFI anything so go figure.

$2350 for an EFI system???
OUCH!!!

But yeah there are "hidden" costs
Such as that "corvette style" fuel filter/regulator is only $30 but the connections/adapters people use to get it to -6AN will run you $50 for the set.
Then of course, everyone wants to run braided instead of rubber EFI hose.
That's like $5 per foot.

I checked the beginning of your build post and MAN seems like you went through it in the early stages.
I'm sure you have a fire breathing dragon by now tho.

I`m thinking one of the newer 6.1 truck hemi`s when my 4.7 lays down. should be a few around when and if that happens. sure sounds like it would be a bit-h tho.

Not $2300 exactly
EFISource Gold Box and harness= $1295
92mm cable TB=$370
Wideband O2 w/indash digital readout=$250
80lb/hr Siemens injectors=$250
DW300 pump=$130
Fuelab reg and gauge=$130
Magnafuel 10 micron lifetime filter=$80
Tanks Inc hanger for intank pump=$80
Homemade surge tank with trap doors in tank=$90
So yeah it wasnt junk yard scores like some can get, but I have WHAT I NEED for my power level and driving style which is far from a stock retrofit. I can add a dry 250hp hit of nitrous and have the existing support in place. I am also set up to go to E85 in the event I decide to.

Who says I would want the aftermarket fuel injection either? you can get a motor/tranny/wiring harness + ecm/pcm for ~2k. All the aftermarket megasquirt and isn't really necessary for a stock build, or even a cammed build at that point. Or you can buy the intake for I am sure less than $400, and run a carb with the factory coil controllers.

I'm not sure you can run an engine on the factory computer for the coils and a carb for fuel. Pretty sure the computer isn't going to like not seeing injectors and other sensors very well. Admittedly I'm not sure I've seen anyone try either.

I obviously left off a lot of items.

TTI - 5.7 / 6.1 Hemi Steel Engine Mounts, Spool Style $266.95
TTI motor mounts for 73 up a body
I am doing a k member swap.

I am going to try and use grand Cherokee exhaust manifolds. Some say they won't fit, some say it will, some have done it. I won't know until I try. Oh, they were about $100. off ebay.

I picked up a blemished radiator on ebay for around $100. I think they run around $200. cc1643

CichliDart,

Did you get a chance to install the 90 Degree Adapter yet? I was wondering if you needed to notch the K- Member.

Thanks,

Joe Dokes

Making your own mounts, especially the passenger side, affords you to not have to use any oil filter block off or angled adapter. Wouldnt it be nice to just put the filter in its stock location?
