Old Yeller

Looking things over a while ago, the header collectors and a crossmember want to occupy the same space. I am going out now and hope to have the motor and trans out of the way this evening.

I noticed that on my 68 three quarter ton also. So I just went with dual exhaust.

Well, the 318 is out. Here are the crossmember ears that the headers run into. I will have to box the frame there because the leaf springs tie in there.

Had that issue on a '70. We cut out "archways" for the header clearance. Worked great.

Well, I may not be smarter than what I'm working on, and I may not even be tougher anymore......

But I am more stubborn!

14 frame rivets gone... I will have header clearance now. I still have to box the frame there.

LOL.... as soon as i read this I instantly thought of Curly wrecking saw blades on his head :D :D

3 stooges for those that don't know....

Actually, most of my formal education came from watching the stooges.

And, from watching Wyle E. Coyote try to catch the Road Runner......

Back in the seventies me and my buddies would get home from work Saturday morning and watch The Bugs Bunny Roadrunner hour together. The neat thing was the hour was an hour and a half. LOL then we would go out in the garage and work on the cars.
Then go to the drag strip.

What more could a guy ask for? Sounds like great times!

Talking to 318WR about the old days today... I thought I would show a picture of my front lic, plate and a valve cover from my old sleeper 4 door Valiant. It was really a mild 360.

Fooled a few chevy and ford guys...

That old 4 door Valiant had a 10.5 compression 360 , MI dual plane, and I put several different cams over a few years. Mild to wild. The best all around was the old MP 274. It had 3.91s with sure grip, a reverse pattern 904 and a 9 1/2" converter. It was also our only transportation for several years. It replaced our 71 Demon when we were expecting our 3rd son. We did not think it would work out real well with 3 car seats in a 2 door.

My wife is actually the one who located the Valiant. She saw it in town after grocery shopping and followed it until it pulled into a driveway. She came home, I packed in the groceries, and we took off to see if it was for sale. Of course it wasn't, but I left my phone # with them.

A couple of weeks later I got a call, they wanted to sell it.

My oldest son now owns it, It is his only car. He has a lot better motor than I did....still 3.91s

that's cool how your son still owns it. My wife finds cars that get 13 mpg and then wants to take them across the country ..... . . .

Kind of heavy, but I am using h beam rods and .984 Pins, my bob-weight is 1964 grams. I hope to have time to spin it Monday.

I guess I put it in the other thread. I balanced the crank the other night, so that is done.

Today I took a little time and removed another 14+ pounds.
I think I have reached the point that any more weight loss will be a lot of effort for little gain, at least chassis/ body wise. I will keep at it as time and weather allow..

The biggest losses now will be the aluminum heads, little starter and such. Headers will be lighter than manifolds, but my 3" pipes may gain most of that back.

Does it still have the 318 in it now?

I honed the 340 block earlier this week. I have also been SLOWLY working on building some traction bars. a little progress at least....

Slapped bars or Cal-Trac style?

Cal-Trac or Assassin type. Depending on what I can make from the scrap pile. I made up the lower brackets, but I am slow. I am not even sure how well they will work with truck springs, but I will still want to use it as a truck once in a while. I will try them out and see what happens.

Well, I guess I am getting mixed up on which thread I put things in.... Anyhow, I got some plate and cut out the upper brackets for the homemade caltracs. I still need to layout the holes in them. I made the lower brackets a couple of weeks ago and they are bolted on the truck.

I have removed a few more pounds here and there too. Nothing real substantial, but it all adds up.
