Parts Prices, WTF?!

-
I think a lot of guys don't account for the fact that the younger generation isn't interested in collecting cars, unfortunately most everyone in the hobby is north or 50 years old. So in my opinion if you are holding onto parts believing that you're gonna get top dollar in the future I would re think that plan.

Hard to argue, but on the flip side, I was able to create a mopar monster out of at least one son, maybe two and my daughter is next. I'm doin' my part spreading the love.

I Cant remember which site i was on but there was a mopar hood tach for sale 750.00 and the seller didn't even know if it worked maybe it was a fair price but to me i thought it was rather amusing .
since obviously without question no one's going to give him that kind of money for a questionable tack he's asking for a reasonable offer???
Again what's reasonable to him starting at that point is not even worth my time trying to tell him what I think is reasonable... I would love to have it and I would put it on my car... But I think we are several light years apart under the umbrella of reasonable...

I have always had certain models, first were E bodies way way back, they 68-70 B bodes then.etc etc. I always was building projects so I was always on the lookout for extra parts I would need. That made sense. Then there were my "keepers" at that time. Reasonable to have extra parts and pieces for them, right?
I also come across parts cars, kept what I might need, so the rest. Helped pay for what I was working on. One day I woke up, and there ere parts out the yazoo! I was so glad when they all went away. Trips to Mopar Nats, other swaps, one day, I just gave a truck load to good Mopar bud. He came home from work, and a file of parts taller than his double garage doors to his shop!! That was the last of that stash! ha

i just never understand posts like this.. if someone wants the deal then he should be out there hunting for the parts and first there with the money. plenty of good deals out there still. just have to be on the look out or when ya see it grab it before anyone else. if you think a sellers price is too high offer what you think its worth or move on. i see decent deals and i see stupid asking prices.. the seller will find out if his price is too high if the part doesn't sell. let him sit on it until it sells. no need to get upset about it..

its not like this is something new.. i can go back to the 80's and 90's and it was happening.. i remember selling a perfect set of 73 dart fenders at the mopar atlantic nationals dirt cheap just to get them out of the garage.. for the next three years i saw the guy who bought them load and unload them because he had them priced too high. funny thing is when i sold them you could have bolted them right onto a car the same color and been done with it. they were that nice.. three years down the road they were a mess. i used to laugh every time i saw him get to the show, unload them, then reload them because they didn't sell.. so lets not pretend that this is something new...

i also don't see the big deal on wanting to make money on parts.. if i find a good deal on something i want but don't really need i'll grab it if i have the extra cash at the time. for example i have 3 340 air cleaner set ups that i'll probably never use but i wanted them. saw them advertised at good prices and bought them (could easily make money on them if i sold them and a buyer would thing they got a deal too) may hang them for display one day... i may one day list those parts for sale higher then what i paid for them in order to pay for something i may need.. the market will dictate what i can get for them.. i'm sure not out to gouge anyone but i'm also not giving away good valuable parts ether.. again this is nothing new. been this way a long long time.. like stated already in this thread, they aren't making these original parts anymore. unlike a lot of GM parts they aren't making quality repops of some of this stuff either..
Exactly, when I was rebuilding a 70 Dart in the 90s, you couldn't buy anything repop for it except fiberglass front fenders. I had a set, and they were absolutely garbage. I think I gave them away they were so bad. I got them with one of the 13 cars I parted out while doing the one. I gave away a truckload of other parts when I moved because I didn't want to haul them across the country, and even still I had to convince the guy that I gave them to that they were worth keeping. I just couldn't bring myself to taking it all to scrap. Now when I see prices that I think are ridiculous I just laugh and ignore the post.

So many times I have taken the time to box up parts, and get shipping quotes, then the prospective buyers flake out on me and disappear. I have 2 boxes in my trunk right now for that reason. Will unload and put them back on my sales parts shelf. Running around like that costs money and time too. When I no longer need parts for projects, I'm gonna do a mega unload of it all and be done with it.

I agree, I'm 58 and I need one of y'all to get off that dual snorkel air cleaner for a 70 Duster before I flame out or go broke!:lol:

I am in that "I'll sell things when my car is done" boat...man I don't know what I've spent over the years, but some of it was a deal other things I've paid too much etc. I am just glad I was able to afford to restore a car... people tell me I have alot of "chit" I say well, I never had a woman telling me I couldn't buy this or that..." like most guys do. Actually my woman is like "when are you going to get that dart finished? its been years now...":) I had her out to the garage the other night, I showed her the "Plum Crazy" cutting in work in the door jambs, I said "I sprayed this, if I can lay the paint down on the rest of the car this nice, Ill be happy" :) Really though parts, I think someone said its worth what someone will pay, another thing I've learned is if you are in a hurry you'll spend money like its on fire. if its something that will finish up your car quick, you may just pay the money because you are at the finish line. I think this may be why Interiors are expensive, or at least i think they are expensive anyway.

Nice replies Guys!
I can’t believe that American P’s is scripted!
That’s the best program on UK tv...
They got a great deal on the Runner, I was gutted as I’ve wanted one for 40 years...
Best swap meet for me is always the Spring Fling Van Nuys Ca. Met some fantastic folks there since 2004, can’t wait to get back again.
Best two days of the year, without a doubt...
Yep we all know the dealers buying up the cheap stuff and re-pricing at double or treble, bet they have got a lot of stuff, THEY AIN’T never gonna sell...

The facebook groups are crazy! $900 date coded starters and alternators. I saw one guy selling "factory low mile" amber turn signal bulbs for $25 a piece on facebook. I try to sell parts cheap on here, not to make any money, but it does take me time to pull parts, box them up, and ship them. Heck, ive got a ton of stuff i cant GIVE AWAY. Some parts i would just be too embarrassed to even ask money for, like all those slant six parts and that 7.25" rearend i keep tripping over

Oddly enough, the stuff people throw away, is the stuff that gets expensive. Just look at McDonalds toys.... Some people pay serious money for that crap.

Hey, I like me a good Slant. Maybe if I asked too much money for it someone would want it then? lol

I read a post from a very nice young man on here about a year ago talking about an aftermarket radio that he had and it went bad and I had the same unit just laying there. I sent it to him and paid the ride and told him to pass on the kindness to someone else. He pm'ed me later and told me how he fixed a neighbors vehicle and got them going! There are some good guys and gals out here and maybe we can help them with some of our junk! That was certainly worth the few bucks I "invested"!:icon_fU:

My neighbor is getting older, other night he asked me about a torque wrench because he had the front wheel off his Harley, I ate dinner and went over and got the book out, torqued everything. Then last night he was like "can ya change the oil on it for me Ill pay ya...?" I was like " yeah well get into it then on a weekend when its sunny and nice out ...":) i have the same bike, a Super Glide so he knows i know how to do it. I dont think ill charge him anything, hes a good neighbor :0

Old lady across the street came over with a one foot long seat belt buckle knew from the dealership and said that her seatbelt won't click into her old one and asked me if I would replace this..
I walked over to see why it wasn't clicking in and tried it and it wouldn't work and looked inside her old seatbelt... Walked across the street got my pick tool and picked out the plastic shopping bag out of her old one and it worked fine... told her to take that new seat belt back to the dealership and get her money back...

When I was building my car ,I would through parts away. Then the next day some one would be wanting one. I decide not to scrap stuff for a long while.

Just like with everything now a days, you have to be able to sort the fly **** from the pepper.
I believe the vast amount of members selling parts are honest and are not out to make a $ killing. There will always be those individuals out there that will try to take advantage of people.

It is a big boy or girl hobby. If you want nice vintage stuff, sometimes its not going to be cheap. I've wanted certain cars and parts so much that it was worth it to me to pony up the cash and get it.

Sometimes it's either step up and pay or just lay on your bed dreaming of your dream car in a little pin up above your bed.

I will say that i am ashamed to say that I scrapped trashed stuff back in the 80s when I was a kid that I realize was useable now. but back then i didnt know and stuff was easier to come by, I scrapped a 360 short block because I wasnt going to use it,it was in the way and I needed beer money, I trashed a 70 dart grille that I now realize may have been repairable...etc. The 360, at the time it was given to me, I think I bought a 360 manifold with a 600 Holley on it for 40 bucks, I mean things back then were "cheap" No I didnt trash the Holley LOL!

Selling anything can be difficult. Everyone’s perspective is unique. I’ve tossed plenty and probably will do more because even free it’s too much for anybody... I take that to mean it’s junk so I toss it.

Yeah I mean it comes down to you want to get rid of it or clean your garage out,at that particular time if nobody wants it, do you hold on to it for a year and try again to sell it? most don't they are trying to move the stuff...

At the swap meets I’m known as “cheap parts guy”, and I’m ok with that. I don’t try to make a killing on stuff, and give away a lot of stuff for free, I want people to be able to continue on their projects, and if I can help with a part, I’m ok with that too.

Now, some things you just can’t let go cheap....”I know what I got”!

Personally I don't sell on the Forum because it's just far too much trouble... I have a lot of respect for the people who do because all the packing and dealing with people and the money back and forth, what a pain!...
I do sell locally and just within the last couple months sold a set of 72 truck doors... Had them for over a year and put them on and off Craigslist with no buyers... Posted them again a couple months ago as a last ditch effort before they went to scrap... A guy tried to lowball me from $200 down to $100 and for that price for a good set of doors I was more than willing to scrap them I said no... Then a couple weeks later he text me saying if he was to give me $150 he wanted to know all about them and I told him no...$200.. he finally came and got them and met me at the store and was all pissy and throwing the money at me acting like a real big baby... 2 weeks later I bought a 74 truck and now I'm looking for doors and would gladly give him 300 bucks for them back...lol...
Sold a set of 273 rockers with banana grooves locking adjusters all notched for bigger Springs for $175... Just bought an old crappy set for 100 with no banana grooves and in need of adjusters...
Moral of the story is half the time I sell stuff I end up needing it back and can't get it at the price I sell it for even when people complain about the price...
