Ram tranny problems

-
my 94 Dodge 2500 ram trans went out...yes..the cheapest was 1500.00 bucks..

did it myself...probably with new converter..around 500 bucks..

No one will touch that tranny for less than 1200 bucks.

What would be the charge if you pulled the trans and take it to them?

They claim that valve body, converter, clutches, and all the electronics need replaced if its opened up.

If you have the trans rebuilt the electronics should be replaced. My governor solenoid went out at 40k miles and I had to replace it. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I know they like to replace the converter because of contamination could come from the converter into the nice rebuilt trans.

Yeah the 1200 bucks is for a bench rebiuld if it take the trans out my self. But the valve body needs replaced too? I can understand replacing everything if the tranny completely exploded. I don't know maybe you should like I said before sometimes its the little stuff that gets you. Fishy what's engaged in reverse in that mechanical sequence? I'm just pushing buttons in my head wondering why everything else is still working.

In reverse the front clutch pack and the rear band are applied.

He said the valve body needs replaced too? That's a rare thing to have to replace. The overdrive solenoids and a pressure switch are screwed to the valve body and as Mully said it is common to replace the electronic switches and torque converter as metal and friction material clogs them up. They aren't real expensive though. Probably less than $250 for the converter and electronic switches from one of the sources I referenced in the links above. Do you have another place to check with? I would after the incorrect information he told you about the rear strut falling out.

I took it to another tranny guy today and he said something is causing it to go into two gears at once. He said there's a snap ring that fails in the overdrive that may cause this because of a bad accumulator. He's saying about 1200 to rebuild but that includes a new converter. Is it possible to do myself? I do have some knowledge in trannys. I want to to a book on it just to make sure. I need a parts list that I need to order too if possible.

1200 with a warranty?? Sounds better than rolling the dice on a junkyard trans. It sounds like your daily driver, and you keep second guessing your skills. It's not that you can't do it, if your like me you only want to do it once. Nothings more frustrating than a new trans that still doesent work right. I've done 40 or 50 transmissions(904/727) for myself and friends and never had a problem, but when it comes to my daily I leave it to the pros, money well spent.

Take it for what it's worth $.02 maybe less

I'm not second guessing myself I guess its just lack of experience. Trannys are one thing I've never got involved with. I only did one in school and it turned out good. I just want to get the truck ready for winter. I want to use it to haul the dart to the track next year too. I should have never got rid of my 05 hemi ram for a blazer. It was the truck or my house I needed money down but then again the kids love it here and it makes it worth it. I just missed the truck so I got this one.

I don't know what your mechanical level is but for what it's worth the torqueflite (I know yours is not called a torqueflite but that's what it is with an OD added) is by far the easiest auto trans. to rebuild IMO.

The only manuals I know of for your trans. are either the factory serv. manual or one of the ATSG manuals which are basically a factory serv. manual with a little added info. The ATSG manuals are pretty cheap.

As far as a parts list goes there is the basics of a rebuild which are the complete overhaul kit, a set of bands if the overhaul kit doesn't include them, a set of thrust washers, a set of bushings, and a few selective thrust washers. A tub of trans-jel (assy. lube) a filter and ATF. Since you don't have it apart it's hard to say what else you may need as there could be broken or worn out hard parts. Hopefully not but you never know until you get it apart.

BTW: how many miles does the truck have on it?

The truck has 158,***. Motor is strong and no cancer holes. There is a little rust on the pass side rocker but maybe the size of a quarter and still solid(tried pushing my finger through it). I got it cheap and I figured it would need a little work. I think I'm going to try it myself that's how I learned how to do everything else. Thanks guys for all the help and hopefully within the next few weeks I will have a good truck worthy of pulling the dart around. There's no way I'm pulling the dart with a chevy or ford.

That's how I learned them too. Back when I was 17 the torquelite went out in my old 66 Chrysler so I got a serv. manual and yanked it out and rebuilt it in auto shop class. Worked great.

Well I've been sitting on what to do and what the possible problems are and after a month I stumbled on something that I wanted. I found a complete set up to make my truck a 5 speed with a nv4500. It came with everything computer pedals bell housing trans slave and master cylinder. I paid 650 for everything. I will probably be one of the only people running a 5.9L 1500 with a nv4500. The swap is coming this week I can't wait. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

sounds like a plan. A buddy of mine put a Cummins in his 1990 Ram 1/2 ton. Neat thing about them (at least the older ones) is the frames are the same so everything bolts right up.

Well guys the tranny swap is on day number 3. I've had to pull it twice and might have to pull it a third time. The clutch will not disengage. I bought the set up from a 95 1 ton ram that is now going into a 98 1500. Nv4500 is possible I guess. Driveshaft lengths where fine cross member was good. I wired the park/neutral saftey switch the the clutch saftey in the pedal. Crank/flywheel sensors were different(auto was longer hitting the flywheel). I had to buy the 98 master to bolt into the firewall but bought the 95 slave. Brand new clutch disc pressure plate and throw out and pilot bearings(had to buy the pilot bushing too). New fork, pivot, and fork retaining spring. I can't get it into gear unless its shut off then I start it and I creeps forward when started in gear. I may have to buy the 98 slave with it being a different part number like the master. If that doesn't work could it be a bad pressure plate? Any input helps. Thanks guys.

It was the slave and master cylinders not working with each other. I threw the new slave in and went right into gear after I started it. Yay no more automatic. I now have a reliable truck to escort the dart to the track next summer. Thanks everyone for the help.

Congrats on a dependable truck now. I might check in on the price of doing mine that way when my automatic goes south.
