Hello, I maybe sell the parts of the Fury III this car have a 318 Poly with a 727 Torqueflite, this is a great engine, and i think if is compatible for replace the 273 of my barracuda, which problems can exist with the process???
Is compatible with the manual gearbox of my actually 273???

I too think performance my 273, I have a intake manifold edelbrock and a edelbrock 500cfm four barrels carb, I have a hookers headers and I like change the camshaft for a upgrade performance, my engine have the mechanical lifts, is possible a change of this by a hidraulic lifts????

Thanks! sorry again for my english... is horrible!!!

Cuda67Spain;

The 273 can be replaced with a La series 318-340-360 engine. Sell the Poly or use it in the Fury, just don't swap it into the Barracuda. Keep the 273 on the side. Some parts differ alittle bit. Like the timing chain cover. The timing marks on the cover could be on the otherside of the cover on a newer engine.
Also, the water pump could have this problem with the lower hose connection.

What year Barracuda is it?

318 Poly will not fit.

the 273 was designed to fit the 1963-66 Abody,
it was based on the too wide old 318.

sell the 318 poly, and find a newer 318.That will fit without much problem.

Is your car an automatic?

But... My 318 Poly from 1966 have 230HP, is better a other engine more new???
My car have manual gearbox, but the 318 poly have a 727 torqueflite, is possible fit in my car????

The 318 from a Jeep Grand cherokee is valid for this change???? in Spain this engine is easy for buy....

Thanks!!!

The poly timing chain, and crank would fit in an "LA"
engine.

Measure the valve covers, and the intake.
Measure the total width.
exhaust will not interchange.

For info on the Jeep engine, I don't "Think" it will work.

A 318 from anything After 1967 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth will work.

The 318 poly is actually a 318A while the "new" style 318 was the 318LA. Don't compare the 230hp rating of the poly to the 318 in the Jeep Cherokee. They are different ratings. The older poly rating is gross HP at the crank while the newer HP ratings after about 1972 were net ratings at the end of the transmission with all accessories on and operating. That is why some older motors have the higher ratings than newer ones.

The Poly 318 doesn't look like the 273 right? Different valve covers, bigger engine, different intake manifold, etc....
The 318 Poly was made until 1966 here in the states. After that, the LA engine was only produced. The LA engine series displacements were 273, 318, 340, 360. Outside diamentions are the same, minus exhaust manifolds and carb height and air cleaner style height.

The only thing to watch for is the 340 & 360 engine side boss' for the motor mounts. The 340 & 360 are slightly narrower than the 273/318. This is not a problem. You can use washers to take up the space.

The 727 will use a little bit more power to operate than the 904. The 727 is a little longer than the 904. That means you'll have to cut the driveshaft or get a new one made.
