Serious 64/65 904 trans question

Charlie, I have another question if you don't mind. I have a 65 Dart GT that has a slant 6 and an original 904. I am going to do a 360 Magnum conversion since the slant 6 bell housing will not work on the Magnum I bought a used 904
from a 68 Charger that I am going to rebuild. I would like to retain my original floor shifter if possible. Can I swap the parts from my Slat 6 trans with the Charger trans to make this work? Are the valve bodies the same? case etc...
I will not be using the Trunion setup. I got an 8 3/4 rear to install as well. Thank you in advance

The Trans cases are different, so, no you can't put the early parts you need to make it work, easily. It might be able to be done, but a lot of work. Imperial Services used to have a conversion kit to allow a PB shifter to work with the later trans, but it was expensive, and they were slow to deliver. I don't know if they could do the factory floor shifter. What I would consider would be to get a cable shifter like in post #12 and and use that, or get the installation kit without the shifter, itself, and see if you can hook that cable to your factory shifter. Just be carefull to match the detents on the shifter and the valve body.

Thank you, Charlie, I will take a look at my shifter and see if I can hook up the cables from another cable shifter. If not I will just have to use a whole new shifter.

Now, if you’re really up for a challenge, in 1965 only they made a 727 small block trans with the cable operated controls and the slip joint tailshaft. They came in 273 B body cars when so equipped. Not all were equipped with this trans, so it’s hard to find. Look for them in 4 door Coronets and other like cars from 65.

Not sure if you can just replace the tailshaft between this trans and a 904, but I know it swaps with the big block 727, as that’s what I did for my 64 Belvedere, and ended up with a big block push button trans with a slip joint tailshaft. A rare piece indeed!
