Slant 6 Turbo... Tight quarters. I could use some pointers

For years I've dreamed of putting a turbo on Hooptys slant. Mainly just for the fun of it since the ol' truck isn't built for any kind real speed. If you've ever been in one, you'd understand . SO help me look at this as Form over function.. Don't care about gaining massive horsepower but I do want it to sound amazing :) Love the sound of a turbo and the blow off. It may lead to more but let's keep it simple for now. Pishta really sums it up nicely in one post I read

I have a few challenges ahead of me... knowledge and space! I have read alot of turbo articles aimed at the slant so I get the basics of it all. I'm quite capable of most any fabrication and mechanics but Turbos are not my field of expertise.

I believe the only option in my case is to modify a stock manifold due to space. Pretty sure the J pipe will place the turbo in a bad spot and fall outside my boundries. The engine compartment on A100s is pretty tight and I need to hug in to the engine as tightly as possible. The side panel is actually formed so the stock air cleaner has clearance. I believe it's Serj and MJK that I saw that have pretty compact systems. I'm sure there are others and I've read so much that it's almost made it worse... one of the reasons I'm posting.. So I can keep track haha. I haven't found alot of details on the manifold modification tho..

As for the fuel system I'm seeking out a decent Holley 350 to put on a 2 bbl stock Mopar intake I picked up a few years ago.. Needs adapter right?

As for the Turbo itself I'm torn. I've read everything from a 2.2 to buick to a Celica to.. yea, alot of options. I want want a good sound rather than power :D And along with that is the wastegate and blow off valve.

If there are a few tips and pointers that you guys have, I'd love to hear them. Keep in mind I'm shopping.. so if you have what I need shoot me a pm

Down low? You need it high enough to reliably drain the oil Google. I've found lots of photos on turbo ideas and slants seem like they would be fairly easy.

Thanks 67 and I had to chuckle at the down low reply. Believe me...I have googled just about every image there is lol. I've seen and studied the image that you attached. Problem with that one is that the duct work won't clear my doghouse panels and on either side of the doghouse is the fender wells.. If I could turn the ducting off the turbo 90 towards the radiator it might work..

Not mine but you can see what I'm working with here. Keep in mind that it is a little more open down low.

I've read enough to understand that I need to be above the oil. I think the first slant turbo project I read was over on slantsix.org. several years ago. It was Waynes "$400 slant 6 turbo setup" which is basically a junkyard build. Something about it just seemed nostalgic and would just "fit" if I could make it fit. In the pictures that are attached with that article, I saw this...

Now I know that particular article is pretty outdated and the pictures with it are horrible but this is just about what I need to achieve in order to fit. Something about this picture just looks a bit off tho.. Is this achievable? I question it because it's the only setup Ive came across like it
 
You don't HAVE to mount the turbo up high. If you are just going for the turbo noise, mount the turbo further down the exhaust system where you have tons of room, and use a scavenge pump to get the oil back to the engine. Having the turbo further back will give you the "sounds" you are wanting. Google "rear mount turbo".
 
I've looked at some of the systems.. they interest me and I should have plenty of room. The scavenge pump would add a hundy or so and a little extra ducting to the carb.. Planning to do a complete new exhaust anyway so it might be just as easy to factor all of that in.. maybe?

For whatever reason, the manifold turbo still calls me.. why is that lol
 
Maybe place the turbo up high and modify your engine box to allow it. I debated putting mine up high enough at one point that I could drain it into the valve cover. You could also find a way to put it on the other side and drain into the fuel pump block -off if you're going for an electric fuel pump (which you should be).

Your goals for turbo are a lot like mine - you just want to do it, not really for the maximum power, but just to have it. I get it. You'll get there.

Right side is not an option at all. I've looked at some draw through ideas but I think it'll just be a huge pita. Trying to loacate a few parts to mock up now.
 
If it was me, I'd just remote mount it. Solve you a ton of issues, as in how are you gonna keep it cool enough in the doghouse, to not burn the truck to the ground?Or crack the turbo, warp the manifold, etc, not to mention containing the BOV from leaking exhaust into the cabin.Am I being paranoid? Probably. But when your pants catch fire at 75 mph,you will be more than paranoid. When fire comes it is no respecter of man, and just a few seconds will change your life forever.
Correction; BOV should be WG.

Excellent points! The decision just keeps getting easier... We may have a winner with the remote mount
 
A remote idea not a bad idea works well on many applications. If you want to keep it in the dog house, I would get some more insulation and put in on the cover, the BOV doesn't blow off exhaust just air so that's not a issue, plus you can put that on either side of the turbo hot side( pipe off the turbo to intercooler) or cold side (after IC). Are you planning on internal waste gate or external? If you go external just run a tube off and under the cab or bed or put it back into the exhaust, I personally like the external wg and dump to atmosphere love the sound. Internal don't have to worry about it since the down pipe will have the opening for it into the exhaust anyways. Good luck with the build, that thing will run good once all said and done.

I agree than a rear-mount turbo is the only choice that makes any sense in this particular application. It will free-up a lot of room under the hood, and run a WHOLE lot better than it does, now!
