There's a cool little program here that tells you how fast your connection is..

I use a Mac for most internet surfing and it's usually pretty flawless, but the PC for work can be annoyingly slow sometimes.. I might give that Google Chrome a shot .. Keep us posted on how it works out JR ??

I've been using Chrome for about a month now and it is great for slower sites like this one and e-bay. It does take some getting used like scamp said. Seems allot of things are set up backwards compared to IE and it doesn't have as many buttons as IE so in a sense it's simpler but I've found myself having a hard time finding stuff I used to be able to find easily on IE.

64cuda it sounds like to me your system is all screwed up possibly due to a virus or trojan and needs re-formatted. That's probably the only fix since so much stuff is missing and corrupted. BTW: Don't think that no virus can't get through Norton. It's not infallibale by a long shot. I've had 3 get past my Norton. Luckily I was able to remove them without re-formatting.

How did you find them & remove them? Is there a shareware program somewhere that would help? As far as reformatting, that's gonna wipe everything off of the drive. I have a peripheral backup drive. If I reformat & then restore from the backup, would the virus be stored on it & reinstalled? I can't even use system restore because the only admin account we have on here gets a blank page when we try it. No restore dates to pick from. :angry7:

I'm hoping to have enough money after the holidays to replace this computer. It's four years old & that's ancient as far as computers are concerned.

Actually Norton showed they were there. It just couldn't do anything with them but when I typed in the name (what Norton called them) on microsofts website it told me how to remove them. I had to start it up in safe mode to remove the bad stuff. Of course you have to know what it is to remove it. Have you ran Norton to see if it shows any problems? Sorry I don't know of any freeware for problems like this. There is one registry problem repair aid I know of but it's not free but if I remember right it didn't cost much. It's called MaxPC. Even after I got the viruses out of my puter it didn't act right. Hanging up all the time and such. I downloaded MaxPC as a last ditch effort before I junked the puter and it found 290 some problems in the registry. After it did it's thing it works good now. Here's the link to their page

Good luck.

Norton doesn't show anything. I bought & used RegCure. It found close to 700 registry problems (IIRC, might have been a lot more). Had it fix them. No noticeable improvement to the PC. Couple weeks later it finds about the same number of problems again.

Basically, registry repair software works to fix windows registry by scanning various areas of your computer's registry to see if there are any invalid registry entries. When data changes on your computer - for example you delete a file and the registry doesn't remove the invalid data and often times you will continue to have a reference to a non-existent file remaining in your registry. Because of this reference to a file that is supposed to have been deleted, the registry continues to get filled with invalid data.

Wow that's sure allot of problems. That's strange how they show back up a couple weeks later. maxPC seemed to fix them for good on mine. After about a week about 3-5 errors show up on mine but that's about all and that's probably due to what TomT966 said on how things work in the registry. If it were mine I'd try using the opperating system disc to repair the system and if that didn't work I'd reformat it even in spite of having to reload stuff. At least if you reformat it and reload stuff new the probability of it working right is pretty good.

I wish I had something better to add but that's about the extent of my computer knowledge, what little it is. Maybe somebody else has some better suggestions??
