I can't even imagine what homeowner's insurance will cost in California now; if one will even be able to get it.
I suspected there is going to be mass exodus. I hope the insurance bonds are enough for people to rebuild.

I have heard that several insurance companies had pulled out of California. I assume they left people hanging. I wonder if any of these people who lost everything were without insurance because they were dropped and had not been able to find any yet. there is one or two native palms to california. though the majority of non native species were brought around 300 years ago by the spanish and there was a great influx from mexico in the early 1930's (especially to los angeles).
no matter though, because when stucco houses with tile roofs are burning it doesn't much matter what's native or not.
100%. In 2011, I was working the Monument Fire in AZ. The fire was about to crest a hill and begin burning down towards the town. We cut dozer lines and were beginning to back burn the grassy field that the fire was heading towards. The little wind that there was, was at our backs and blowing towards the fire. Everything was moving slowly with plenty of time. We began our back burn and everything was going as planned, until the wind picked up and shifted direction.
We saw sustained 20 mph winds and 30-40 mph gusts within seconds, and by then there was nothing we could do. The fire burned through the dry, waist-high grass just as fast as the wind was blowing. We had to bail. It jumped the 4 lane highway and got into the neighborhood. I don't remember how many structures we lost, but I will always feel regret and self doubt, wondering if there was anything we could've done differently. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
Wildfires are a force to be reckoned with. We win, eventually, but if Mother Nature has other plans, there ain't nothing you can do but get out of her way.
It's hard to tell, but in the second photo, those flames are about 20 feet long and laying down sideways.
I don't know about winter storms, but they've been naming fires for decades.

He's probably right. Did you see where she cut Fire Department funding by 15 million bucks? Yeah, that's an issue.

It's a no win on many fronts with contracts being negotiated every 3-4 years.
Meanwhile property appreciation here out paces most of the country at a crazy pace as it is desirable for the year round climate and job opportunities.
If a Firefighter or LEO is employed, buys real estate and retires selling said real estate at a decent or more profit, moves to Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Arizona etc. that contributes to those states woes and inflated prices and congestion.
USA and the ongoing process and the development spiral moves on.
