OMG, what is with the rust on that silver dodge pickup. I am not used to seeing rust on anything 1980 and newer. I would start twitching and couldn't function if I had rust problems like that around here.
Around here if it is 10 yrs or more and does not have rust, it ain't a local vehicle.

Normal operation for vehicles in the rust belt. You must not get much snow.

I know when I lived in Wyoming they just plow main roads and throw some sand down...no salt...I wonder if Colorado is the same. So they dont see rust like we do..
 
Pure salt on our roads. Or salted sand.
And calcium chloride for dust control in the summer on the gravel roads.

as far as the salt goes, i is applied, and it breaks the bond between asphalt and ice, and then its supposed to be plowed off.But they leave it. Turns into a mess...

Same here...and let the rusting begin!!!
 
Mostly liquid pre-treated here lately. If they salt again Depends on temperature and budget if it’s rock salt or ‘chlorides’. Don’t think they do much sand. If it’s icy, they mix salt and gravel

The Duster has had both quarters, rockers, and rear sections of the frame rails I had to replace....freakin rust belt!!
 
I need to do a ton of back reading that I probably won't do.

I got home from work, long day, long week. 60 hour week.

Then I just had dinner. Cinnamon toast crunch, so yummy.

Now I am going to surf fabo and do nothing and go nowhere and be happy :)

You were chatting with @RustyRatRod a little while back about cleaning up one of your 318 crankshafts for the engine you are putting together, (or taking it to a shop to have it done).

Here is something you can do for yourself on getting that crankshaft ready for use.

If it has some rust on it you can soak it in 6% cleaning vinegar, then polish it up with some emery cloth, scotch brite pads, and finish out the journals with some Crocus Cloth for a nice final finsh on the bearing surfaces. Stay off the knurling swipes at the rear main seal area, they are there to push oil back into the engine from the rotation they are turning.

Here you go as follows:

Clean any big chunks off and degrease, then into the vinegar solution over night.

3 step polish, and you are all done, ready to install.

That was a lot of fun doing that one. A guy had that one sitting around when I went to pick up an 8 3/4 housing, he gave it to me for free to get it out of his space. 360 External Balance cast crank, as I was cleaning it up found out it was a .010/.010 turned out to be a really great crank.

Diamond in the Rough sitting there when I picked it up.
 
So I know this has been a topic on here before but I need some pictures of exactly what some of you have done to compress the 5 mph bumper shocks. I had the boy drill holes in them near the back of the brackets...expected oil to be in there and, there wasn't any. Did I have him put the hole in the wrong spot? I have also heard of taking the guts out of them?? Not real sure how ya do that?

Here is a wood stand you can make up for laying the crankshaft in so it is easy to work on at bench height. (a little terrycloth on crank journals where it sits in the stand to protect them from scratching).

Can have someone lend a hand and slowly turn the crank while the next person works the 3' band of emry cloth to polish the crank shaft journals, same with the final polish with the Crocus Cloth too.

That is my 17 yr old sons....and we live in the rust belt...lol He has purchased the patch panels and cab corners for it...one of these days we will tackle that. Not a bad truck for $1200...

That's nothing compared to the Dakota that I saw at the store the other day... all of the wheel wells were rusted at least 3 - 4" from the lip and you could see the inner sheet metal... I didn't have my camera to get a picture...

Just crash into something, that'll compress those shocks... :steering:

Or let my ex wife or her sister drive it... Same result.... :rolleyes: :wtf:

On the rear wrap a chain around axle and the suck the rear bumper forward with a Come-A-Long compressing it. Take a 3" long 1" Strap iron on each side and bolt it to the sub frame bracket, as there is already a hole on the bottom side of the chrome bumper that can be used.

For the Front bumper you reposition the bumper brackets at the frame rails moving them back 1 1/2" and drilling another hole in the bumper brackets to fit the stock hole positions in the frame rails.

You have to drill them to release the pressure, compress them and then weld them to stay in the new collapsed position.

Just drilling them doesn’t collapse them, they have to be compressed in.

They are just filled with air.

I know just drilling them wont compress them. I just thought there would be oil in them. I just wondered if I drilled in the wrong spot.

If you drilled into the smaller tube a bit away from the end, you got it right. Try compressing them.

I drilled the outer tube or the actual bracket part. That must be where I went wrong. How did you compress them? Press? BFH?
 
Well Joel did it again. Another custom scratch built leather seat for a rat rod pick up going to Sema courtesy of Stoners Speed Shop. A couple of my buddies.
