Afternoon...
So yesterday I was going to fire up the duster to see if the new
-Voltage Regulator
-Ballast Resistor
-Alternator
were all going to play nice and make and regulate voltage how they should.
Now, I should preface by saying that the key has not always been reliable. even though there is a new switch in it. I thought this was odd but I ignored it because I would just kick the wires under the dash and it would fix itself. Anyway, after I drove the car halfway to a school dance and it died on the way there, the key would not work at all. just a click from the door buzzer switch under the glovebox. becuase that was working; I knew it was something under the hood not working.

After I got tired of having random electrical issues all the time I decided all potential points of failure needed to be addressed.
So on monday I got a new Ballast Resistor and still nothing from the key. today I just got the new start relay by the battery hooked up and now the key works.
Note that all of these things worked fine before the night it died. My theory of what happened is that when the voltage regulator crapped out, the alternator started to over charge which fried it, the start switch, and the ballast resistor. all in one go.
Now that everything related to the charging system and the ignition circuits are brand new and working individually, I am going to fire it up and see if it is charging and everything is working how it should. wish me luck.

ALL RIGHT! Everything works. alternator charges and key works every single time.
the only thing that does not work is the battery. over the course of the engine swap and charging, dying, charging, dying, etc. it is dead. going to get a marine deep cycle battery for it instead

Wrong battery type.

ah damn, they are bigger aren't they?
nevermind then, I thought they made them smaller
I guess I'll just get another used battery
They are not designed like a car battery. Deep cycle batteries are designed to be charged up, then used up, rinse and repeat. Kinda like a cheap *****.

well that is why I wanted one; considering how I usually find a way to kill all batteries regularly.
it might not do it anymore now that everything is fixed, but just in case. I have not gone six months without killing one yet.

Stop buying Rural King batteries

Just get a good battery. Why waste money on a deep cycle? They arent really designed for starting cars. Deep cycle is for depth finders and trolling motors. In your climate a 650 cca battery is all you need.
The marine cranking batteries are no different than a car battery. Different labels. I sold a lot of batteries in the past. And dont be running out and dropping good money on an optima or some other crap like that.

Believe it or not a Wal Mart Never Start. Made by Johnson Controls. Warranty everywhere there is a car show and a Wally World store. I bought a cap and sticker kit to make it look Mopar.
