Stop in for a cup of coffee

ok - I set my initial timing to what I think is 12* advanced - the #1 plug on the distributor cap is essentially pointing straight forward - is that right? I meant to ask Karl this too and keep forgetting when I "see" him

Well, I always set the Dist. so the Rotor faces right at the number one cylinder, But it makes no difference where it faces as long as the firing order is correct and you can move the Dist to get it timed.

I did that - then I turned the engine so my damper reads what I believe is 12* advanced - my concern is that it is opposite.. 12* retarded..

Number TDC, where the rotor faces is number one on the cap. go from there, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 counter clockwise.

So Advanced timing will put the rotor to the left of the number one post on the cap. If like you said the number one is in the front of the cap. So it sounds like you have it wrong.

now that I think, you might have it 12 retarded like you thought. To advance timing you turn the dist counter clockwise.

I am going to have to snap a pic of where I am at later.. this is break in so I don't want to be F-ing around too much with the timing

ok - lets do this - where would the rotor be pointing if I am 12* advanced? I am thinking rotor points forward essentially straight to the front of the car but the distributor/cap assembly should still have #1 pointing to #1 - yea?

If you have your #1 post in the dizzy at 6 o'clock the rotor would point at 5:30.

well the rotor will always be pointing where you set it when you installed the Dist. Now in relation to the cap, if Timing is advanced the number one post will be to the right of where the rotor is sitting at TDC number one.

dah - I have always simply set timing by ear and then fine tuned it with a light -but I want this thing to fire up on the first try so I think I am over thinking it...
