Stop in for a cup of coffee

Let’s see if they can digest what I posted. :)
I probably misunderstood it :BangHead: I did not know lower octane fuels had more therms/unit. Diesel fans were very disappointed when oil refiners started charging for the extra therms the diesel contains. Even though it is one of the first products produced by the refining process, making it much cheaper to produce.

Supply and demand.. And shitty reasons 'why'..

The lower the octane, the more power per unit volume of fuel. This is why you always want to run the lowest octane you can without knock to get the most power from your engine.

The 318 in the '72 was always very happy on 87. By my timing light and marks it was set at 8btdc plus the 40 yr old distributor advance
That makes sense for a 9.2:1 engine running that timing curve and presumably running on the rich side of A/F ratio.

Plugs on the tan side looked good to me.
That means it was using all the fuel it was getting and not running too rich. As long as the A/F ratio and timing are right, plugs will look good. But it also means you are able to run lower octane by being rich bit (like all these cars were out of the factory). A fully optimized 9.2:1 engine should require 89 octane if the A/F ratio is perfect and timing is normal.

Also remember that octane rating was determined differently in the early 70s than it is now.

Today's 87 "Pump" octane unleaded regular (R+M/2) is the same fuel as the 91 "Research" (R only) octane fuel that was recommended in the car manuals of 1971.

Gordon Lightfoot. That is a epic song!
It was several years after I hear that song for the first time that I learned it was about a recent event, not one long in the past.

On the flip side was that I didn’t realize the “the house of the rising sun” was about the 1800s...not the modern era.

Oh well, I was only a kid back then...

So I go go kart racing one Sunday. My kart has a moderately modified HF/Lifan Greyhound on it, shaved head, big round slide mikuni, pipe, moderate cam. My friend ran off from the house without his gas can and borrowed mine, 76 91 octane. His granddaughter the driver has 2 Duffys/national championships and kicks my *** on a regular basis. Her kart has the hot rod B&S World Formula on it, that particular motor was sought by many big time kart racers because it was just one of those motors. You know, one of those where all the machine work was perfect out of the box. "What kind of fuel do you use so I can replace it?" he asks. "76 premium" I says. "Oh OK. we just run 76 regular in that Briggs". That Briggs beat the best World Formulas in the IKF realm and they run 87. :steering:

It’s all about how the engine is tuned.

Vacation time coming...just a few more weeks and I will be spending 14 days fishing and crabbing in the bay of the Island.

Can’t wait...I am long overdue for some “me time”...

They can't seem to survive 2 days without you. What the hell are they gonna do for 2 weeks?

My buddy the drainage foreman is on vacation as of tomorrow. His phone will constantly be ringing.
