Temp probe RPM Air Gap

Hello Everyone. I have a 68 340 with the Air Gap and am adding a Dakota Digital fan controller, which requires the temp sender to be electric. I have a mechanical temp gauge, so I need to purchase an electric temp probe.

I have labeled the picture below with what I have currently. Can I use either of the two purple arrows for the new temp probe? If not where else can I put a second probe?

yeah, The only issue is the length of the probe. Some are too long and will bottom out.
 
You can use them sure. You can even tap them larger if needed. Be careful using NPT Taps. You don't want to go too deep to where you sensor will not get tight on the threads.

The have brass adapters you can use to raise it up for clearance if the probe is too long.

I'm going to use the one next to the fitting labeled "Temp gauge" Dakota digital sells them in pretty small sizes.

The one on the lower part of the picture does not go into the water jacket. It's a mounting boss for the carb return spring so it won't work

Most electric gauge sensors I've seen are 1/8" pipe and the very upper hole is that size. That's the one I used to mount the sensor for my Autometer elec gauge. It's tapped for 1/8" NPT from the factory

if they work anything like my electric sending unit for the autometer gauges you may have to ground the sensor too. I had to on both my vehicles with aluminum intakes. I just wrap a band clamp around the sensor then ground the band clamp with a female spade connector to the end of it.

Did you seal yours with Teflon tape? I've seen ground wires have to added because of that. I seal mine with pipe sealer and have never had to ground a sensor.

I run my fan relay sensor in the top hole of your picture. I have a Derale sensor, their sensor is a real small thread like 1/4" then come with different fittings to adapt to fit different applications. Now my fan is just wired to its own relay and the Derale probe has a 12V power running to it and when the temp reaches 180* it trips the relay and turns on the fan.

maybe that is it, I use the paste over tape but yes it was teflon.
