The topless adventures of Cuda Al

Nice. What year 340? VIN?
69, no point in posting VIN as , I'm not doing a full build again and I would not trust any "used" engine. Not sure someone would want to spend what it would take to get it, never know.

Alan, you sure don't mess around when you set out working on a car. My kudos to you!

I'm always partially on the lookout for my original 340 (8P111754).

Beautiful story! I got bitten by the convertible bug nearly 2 decades ago. The car has slowly evolved from an anemic Slant six, to a strong Doug Dutra built Slant six, to a junkyard Magnum swap, to a Hughes Engines 408 and now to a supercharged 408.

I find solace in seeing other folks afflicted with the same bug. Vive la difference!!

I was afflicted with the convertible bug FOUR decades ago with the purchase of the '68 GTS. Still have it along with the '67 Barracuda. One of these days both cars will be finished again. Side by side a few years ago.

With the paint done I needed to pull the k-member and start detailing under the hood. All the rubber is in great shape and will be reused. If I can it will remain together and go back in that way. I have a proper 68 v8 k-member that will be used.

Will get a coat of black paint before it goes back in.

Not sure what I'm going to do once I'm done working on the house. As it is I had to put the rear end together in the house.

LOL... your kitchen is too nice now to use as a spray booth.

The old engine was loaded up.

With the engine done I covered up the car and painted the engine.

Masked off the firewall well enough to paint some things.

Masked off the core support so I could freshen up the blackout.

Pulled out the parking brake cable and painted it. Got the new brake lines in.

I pulled the column to detail the portion seen under the hood (the inside was nice) as it had been painted over a couple times.
Wrapped it up so I could sand blast it.

Got the engine and transmission together and on the k-member.
The reproduction engine mount hardware are junk and ended up cleaning up some originals
No putting the bolts in per the manual, ended up with all three thread forward.

The house has been an ongoing project and multiple cars were done at the same time.
In 2005 I set out to restore my Barracuda Fastback, at that time I collected everything and brought it inside.

Nice photos of the house... they really show off your work.

I thought I put new front brake lines in when I swapped to disc brakes... maybe I only did one side? I do have a new line for the short side in storage.

We welded the aftermarket sway bar frame brackets to the K-member in my son's fastback. They are too flimsy otherwise, especially with the BIG bar.

You probably did, I never looked at them close.

Bolts on mount should be on the block side with the washers on the bolt. The nut goes against the mount bracket with no washer. Looks like you used soft washers from china.

The engine is out, I had a friend over that has actually pulled a 6 out and understood its quirks.
For the most part it happened quick so no pictures of the pull.
The only issue started when I couldn't find my chain lift sling as I use a carb plate on the v-8s. So I ran down to the parts store and purchased another one, back in business.
We get the hoist hooked up and start the lift (with the transmission attached), we were at the point where we were going to start to move forward to get some more clearance and the engine drops back in.
At first we thought we broke the stud at the rear of the engine we were hooked up to but in looking at the sling we noticed the links on the end holding the brackets were not welded and it just opened up till it broke.

You get any crap from your HOA having the car sitting on the street?

Both the assembly manual and the service manual show all the bolts being inserted from the inside with the nuts on the outside.

If you are referring to the picture of the car with the hood off and the nose in the air, it was only there 5 minutes or so.

Max had upgraded the power steering to a Borgeson gear and Saginaw pump. I had to get a different bracket kit and make some adjustments to the hoses. Still not sure I can get it in the car like this.
IMG_5079.JPG

Closed up the day getting the flexplate/converter bolts in, dust shield on, starter installed, eng/trans braces and transmission cooler line, all stuff easier to do while you have easy access. I tried to get the kickdown linkage installed but the lever on the transmission needed be different. Also installed were the exhaust manifolds and lower pully.

The next day started off swapping out the speedometer pinion.
IMG_5080.JPG

Been there done that, this isn't the first time installing an engine this way.
IMG_5085.JPG

One thing that was different was the the upper control arm and spindle were still on the car. I just mover the car back further in the garage so I could lift it higher. I then put a shipping blanket over the engine and walking the assembly over the engine.
IMG_5088.JPG

Made it in ok, next obstacle was the brake proportional valve another change added by Max.
IMG_5091.JPG

IMG_5092.JPG

Other than having to shift in all directions to maneuver around other clearance issues, it went smooth.
IMG_5096.JPG

Once I had the k-member bolted in the front was jacked up and put on jack stands. I then got the transmission crossmember bolted up. From there I bolted the lower ball joints and got the torsion bars back in. Ran the adjustment bolts in and put the wheels back on.
