turbo 6 bangers post here

Bill, just wanted to let you know I'm watching this everyday I just don't take the time to sign in normally. Keep up the good work! Yours and srixon4406's cars are amazing, I can't wait to see what your cars run when you finish.

Thanks, 0571! We have had a lot of good help to get where we are, from some folks who have been down this path, before.

With their help and the help from our F.A.S.T. A/F ratio meter, we may yet, see some decent numbers out of this bucket of bolts!!!

We appreciate your support; it means a lot!!!

Test!Mike test, test test.

Good evening Bill.

That looks awesome nice work have you run it yet? That's might size snail for a slant what size exhaust housing are you running? We need details:sign3:
Aaron

These pictures were taken today at Freddie's shop. They show the Accusump installation and the blowoff valve.

Currently running 10 pounds of boost and it feels like about 300 hp.

The secondaries are disconnected. Holley 750 DP.

We'lll step it up with some more boost as soon as we get a baseline on a real drag strip.:happy1:

Wish us luck...

It looks good Bill but I'm disappointed not to see any video in today's day and age all these would be slant turbo projects and nobody posts video pics are ok but WE NEED VIDEO

Looks great,Bill !!! Can't wait to see some ET's !

Looking GREAT!!!!!
Will

Thanks, Will! How is your "blue racer" coming along? I can't wait to see whaat it's going to do with the new forced induction intake system!!!

We're just waiting for some racer-friendly weather at the strip, here.:coffee2:

I agree that video is nice, but we haven't had any good racing weather since last fall around here. When that happens, I'll try to get some video showing the chassis dynamics leaving the line, along with sound (such as it is; exhaust note is not among the leaning tower of power's strong suits.... Think a UPS truck on steroids... LOL!)

That guy welding up our 1.6:1 rockers is supposed to have them finished this week, for sure. I hope he does...

Mike, if you want to see some impressive E.T.'s, look at this one...:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QzUfV8iTpQ"]Turbo Slant Six 10.74 @ 127 mph 7-19-10 - YouTube[/ame]

That's Ryan Peterson's turbo slant six. It is a killer!!!!

I only hope our car will eventually run within a FULL SECOND of that car...

He knows what he's doing! We are newbies, and are currently running only ten pounds of boost. Ryan makes probably a little over 500 HP to go that fast with a 727 transmission. I think his boost numbers top 25... a whole different ball game!

We have the secondaries disconnected and are making only around 300 HP at this time. I would estimate that set up like it is, our car MIGHT run in the low 13's.

As we learn more about tuning this thing, we will raise the boost level, connect the back two barrels (Ryan's car ran 11.20s on just the front two barrels) and try some different launch techniques in an effort to get some decent ET's.

Pray for us.... we're gonna need it!!! :prayer::prayer::prayer::prayer:

Thanks for the kind words!!!

Prayers sent Bill  We are waiting on dry weather here as well, George Rays has been rained out for 2 weeks in a row :coffee2:
Stay the course Bill and Freddy, I have faith in you 2 old guys
Remember to send me a pm when you are going to this race track :burnout:

Bill, gotta dumb question fer ya! Why are there 7 clamps on your upper radiator hose?

Bill, gotta dumb question fer ya! Why are there 7 clamps on your upper radiator hose?

Well, Matt, as you may have read, this car is a joint project by my partner, Freddie Nielsen and myself. The car is at his garage behind his house, some 35 miles from where I live. It's about a ten dollar round trip any time I want to go work on it.

Since I am not made out of money, and am retired and on a "fixed income" (and it's not "fixed" very well :eek:ops:,) Freddie ends up doing a lot of the work, himself, in my absence.

He "built" that upper radiator hose out of two pieces he had, and says that once in place, when the pressure would rise in the cooling system, they (the hoses) would swell... so, he added the clamps to prevent that.

I think that the outlet (inlet?) built into the radiator (an aftermarket, aluminum unit,) may be in the "wrong" place, precluding the use of an OEM hose.

That's the best I can do in the way of an explanation, Matt....:D

Have a nice day...:blob:

Have a nice day...:blob:

Well, we WERE having a nice day until the compression gauge showed 50 pounds on #1 and 60 pounds on #2 cylinder, making us think that this turbocharged slant six had blown a head gasket.

So, yesterday, we pulled the head and did a really thorough examination of the gasket, the head sealing surface, and the block deck.

NO indication of a blown gasket at all... in fact, you could see the sealing ring-impressions left on the block and head surfaces that were uninterrupted in their configuration around the cylinder tops.

@$%^&*(&^%$#@!!!

We then took all 12 lifters out of their bores to examine them for surface wear and they all looked brand new; all of them.

The valve clearances also were still "set" as we had them adjusted, and a visual inspection of the valve activity as the engine was turned over was normal.

None of the piston tops showed any trauma or integrity problems of any kind. They are Wiseco forgings.

We took the valves out of the head on those two cylinders and did a thorough examination of their sealing surfaces, along with the integrity of the valve seats. Everything looked exactly as it should...

In short, we didn't see ANYTHING to indicate where the compression was going.

We began to suspect the compression gauge. After all that, we didn't have time (or, energy) to check it out, but I had enlisted the aid of a master mechanic friend of mine who has forgotten more about racing engines than I will ever know, and after looking everything over, he opined that the situation was this: The super-rich mixtures we were running had washed all the oil off the cylinder walls and the compression was simply "blowing by" the (dry) rings.

He suggested that we O-Ring the block and put it back together and try it.

So, that's what we're going to do.

I'm ordering the O-Ring groove-cutter from Isky, Wednesday, and we will try this thing again...

If this were easy, everybody would do it...

I wonder what 20 pounds of boost is going to feel like????

WOO HOOO!!!!!!!

Wish us luck!!!!:prayer::prayer::prayer::prayer:

Good luck Bill nobody said this was going to be easy! Did you guys end up pulling the motor or are you still planning on Oringing the block with the motor in the engine bay?
Bill I total know what you and Freddie are going through its painful sometimes we try so hard and these older cars with the strange ways just fight us like no other. With my valiant right now it's ignition but I believe I'm getting a handle on it right now.
I did pull a true hole shot the other day I flashed the convertor at 3000 rpm and left hard at 7 pounds of boost. I had next to no tire spin and the car pulled hard at 12 pounds of boost through the gears with rock solid afr's 11.5

Keep us posted Bill I'm going to get some video in the next couple days of the car leaving the line but for now here's one I took of the car as it is right now.

Wow Bill, at least we know the head gasket held :blob::cheers: Keeping my fingers crossed for you and Freddie :coffee2: One question , how long did you run the engine on break in time ? Just wondering if the rings had a chance to seal ... O ring it and keep us updated  I hope you are keeping good notes on this build :coffee2: I am sure you and Freddie are :D
Tomorrow is the big day so eat your wheaties sir and take it one step at a time my Arkansas old fart young at hart friends :thumleft:

It's poetry in SLOW MOTION memike. :burnout: there's times where I have to take a couple steps back because I get so frustrated with this temperamental little turbo toad it drives me crazy. :banghead:
