I'm wondering if some one out there has a 273 which is untouched? I need to know what kind of gaskets they had back in -65. Did you seee for example part of the intake manifold gasket? How about the valve cover gaskets. Where they made out of cork? Any info?

I had one in the early seventies. It was a 1964 model that I bought when the car had about 82,000 miles. As I recall, it had steel shim type head & intake gaskets, with cork on the intake ends. It also had cork valve cover gaskets but they might have been changed because the engine had solid lifters so the covers had to come off once in a while. I think cork was the original type material though. I think it also had cork oil pan gaskets with some type of rubber ends. Don't think the pan had ever been off but it did show signs of being patched by brazing. Pretty sure it was done in the car. I think it had paper water pump, fuel pump, & front cover gaskets. Exhaust gaskets were steel shim & the left side had the heat shields for the plug wires.

64 Cuda has it pretty well stated. Here's a photo of my 273 in before restoration trim. Note the heat shields on the driver's side of the engine.

72 Demon! Is your bracket for the acc wire painted or just silver cad? Mine had both and I'm not sure which one is right!

Good luck in finding any headgaskets that won't drop your compression through the floor. The original steel shim are unavailable and all the aftermarket gaskets are made to fit the larger bore sizes of 318, 340, 360 engines.

Not sure which bracket you're talking about. PO had a thing for painting things silver, so I suppose what ever it is would be painted silver.

The ignition wiring should have ferules to go through the slots in the appliques on the valve covers like the ones on the Hemis. Later models used a plastic piece that stuck on a tab on the valve cover that did the same thing.

Anyone knowing if the bracket for the gas wire was painted on 273x4bbl engine? Did they paint the engine with or without the valve covers on these engines? Like they did on the hemis.

The finned valve covers were painted black,
they were installed after the engine was painted red.

The throttle bracket was red.The throttle cable often times had some red overspray on it.

An engine in the car, would have some overspray also on the exhaust
manifold shield gaskets, especially the drivers side.

The paint would of course have been applied differently at times,
because Humans; not robots, did the painting.

I know that the 273 had two exhaust gasket, one on each side. What did it look on the right side(passenger)? I have a feeling that I've seen cars with the same base as the drivers side except for the extension that was put in extra on that side. Any information?

The passenger side exhaust gasket/heat shield was missing on my car when I bought it,
{ not realy needed onthe passenger side}
the heat shield for the plug wires is more needed on the drivers side.

The 273 service book, and the 1965 Service manual do show a small heat shield
for the passenger side exhaust manifold. Pg 11-7 in the big service book I have.
The photos are both small and black and white. :(

Here is a book with some info on the "New" 273.

And another book, I have a copy of this version. :)

Can you see the three holes on each plugwire press out? The lower part is what I have seen on one engine. But I'm not sure if it was untouched.

?? Not sure what you mean,
but our cars are over 40 years old, and not brand new.

They don't have the original engine oil, filters, or gas in the fuel tanks,
nor the original air in the tires, and coolant in the radiator.

Make the car look nice and drive it when the roads don't have snow or ice.

Here is my spare drivers side valve cover, that I have bolted to the wall,
for decoration; it does not have the plastic spark plug wire grommets in it.

Further Below is the engine in my car, with the plastic wire grommets.

cavemanmoron! Between the exhaustports in the gasket there are three holes which holds the upper part to the lower part. What I have seen is that the lower part only were the gasket on the right side. Do you get me right? I'm not sure it's orginal but that was an untouched car.
