What is the best way to remove the rivets on the vin plate in the door jamb? Im painting my 1967 Dart and want to remove the plate, and then reinstall it with new rivets. Thanks.
What year and model? Show us a close up photo. Most door plates were spotted in and not riveted. The rivets Jaz posted above are for dash top tags. What is the best way to remove the rivets on the vin plate in the door jamb? KINDA LIKE THE MATTRESS POLICE ???Just a thought...
Take a pic of the VIN plate's original location and rivets before you remove it.
Not sure about the USA but here in Canada its totally illegal to remove the VIN tag from a vehicle for any reason.
If its missing, Dept of motor vehicles issues a new one when you provide the appropriate documentation and proof of ownership.
Me, I would just carefully tape it up and paint around it and avoid any issues down the road.
Because it is just a rivet and it is not a crime to sell a rivet. If they ain't supposed to be removed, why are they so readily available...

I don't know about other states, but, here in Ca it's not illegal to remove a VIN tag to do repairs. Having been in the automotive industry forever, one of the associations I used to belong to had a meeting with top DMV officials on the subject. He assured us that removing and replacing the VIN tag for a repair was not in violation if no fraud is involved. In fact, being a licensed auto dismantler, I was required to destroy VIN tags, or, certify that they would be destroyed by using only scrap metal recyclers that would also agree to destroy them. If we sold a part that had a VIN tag (like a dash frame, door pillar, etc) we were required to remove it and destroy it. Any other part with an etched, stamped, or tagged VIN and you had to note the VIN on the sales invoice.Just a thought...

Yep.I just wish we had an inside connection with the VIN rivet mfg. so we didn't have to pay insane prices for 2 VIN rivets!
