Veterans On the Board

I found out in December that I have an American Revolution ancestor whom served and was promoted to Ensign. My Father served in World War 2 and my Grandfather served in World War 1. I served in the US Army during the Cold War from '82-'90. My family did not know that my GGGGG Grandfather served during the American Revolution. My Father was with the Marine Corps Honor Guard in Washington D.C. until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. My Father passed away in 2007 and loved American history. I wish he had known about his relationship to an American Revolution soldier. Last week, I completed my application to the Sons of the American Revolution. I intend to keep my sons informed about our family history.

Hi cchrishefish,

MY 4th GGrand Father, Joseph Breed fought in the Revolution. His family owned Breeds Hill where the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought. My dad was in WW1. I had family in every war that the US has had. My paternal Grand Mother was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution. I applied for the Son of the Revolution but decided to opt out. I already have an extensive file on my family history and they wanted me prove it their way. It made no sense to me.

Yes, it can be a PIA, I have other reasons for joining. I find some of their activities like handing out awards to ROTC students and Eagle Scouts to be rewarding. And, I like the fact that they mark Revolution ancestor graves with a nice ceremony. They dress in full colonial uniforms at cemetaries and fire muskets, something I have never done. Also my sons will be eligible for college scholarships. They hold parades in Washington DC and other places in colonial uniforms. I will not be able to do everything on their schedule now, but when I retire in 6 years, this could be something to keep me busy.

My service was from 1966 to 1969, USN aviation second class, Viet Nam 68-69, UH1B'and C's.

I received 2 of the SAR car medallions they are aluminum. I am considering placing one on my 64 Dart GT and my F-150. They are removable.

Thank you for your service shipmate, I spent 2 years aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42 during Vietnam conflict 1970-1971.

Signed up, for the Air Force, with my 2 best Buddies, in April of 1966, on the delayed enlistment, actually left for Amarillo AFB, Tx, on the 19th of August of 1966, served my 6yr enlistment (4yrs active, 2 inactive), started out in wheeled vehicle maint. & about 6 months into my enlistment, about 20 of us, were selected to "volunteer" to cross train into other fields I chose Jet Acft, 1 & 2 Eng, was trained at Sheppard AFB, Wichita, TX, then spent a 2 yr tour, in Northern Japan, crewing an F4C Phantom II & Spent the remainder of my Enlistment, at Hamilton AFB, CA, crewing an F-106 & most of that time, was on Alert Duty, at the end of the runway. Worked for about 2yrs, on the outside & then decided to try for a Dual Status Position, working on the Army Reserve Equipment on the civilian side & as a mechanic, in the Motor Pool, on the Military side. last 2 months then after working for 2 yrs in maintenance, on the onside, I decided to go for a Dual Status position Federal Employee/requiring enlistment in the Army Reserves. I was assigned as a mechanic, in the Motor Pool, in the Reserves & hired on as a WG-08 Federal Employee, working on Power Generation & misc. other equipment. Worked my way up, through the Reserves, to become the Maint Control NCO, in a Direct Support Unit & in my Civilian side of the job, I worked my way up, from a WG-08 Heavy Mobile Equipment Specialist, to a WG-10 Hvy Mobile Equipment Inspector & Retired from both, in 1996, with nearly 30yrs, in each. And, just for the info, my 4 yrs Active Air Force, counted toward my years in service, on the Federal Side. My Dad, was my encouragement. He was drafted in WWII, the Army Reserves started up, shortly after he was released from the Army, after WWII & joined the Army Reserves, right after they started up & he also took the same route, that he encouraged me to, for the security & benefits, to include retirement, from both & put in a total of 42yrs, for retirement purposes. Funny thing is, when I was a Senior in high school, in 1966, there was a day set aside, for the Recruiters to come in and talk to the Seniors. the evening, before they were going to be there, I asked my Dad for his input, on which branch of service I should go for. He looked me straight in the eyes and told me that that was MY decision & he wasn't commenting, because, if he did & I didn't like the choice, afterwards, I would only be able to blame myself, because it was MY decision. LOL! I felt good, with my choice & would do it again. BUT, would most likely stay longer, in the Active Service. Hope I didn't drag that out too much. I KNEW it was MY duty, to serve.

Oh the boredom of being back here in the sandbox.... at least it’s a little extra money to pipe into my ‘66 Cuda when I get back!

Hope everyone out deployed are doing well and those of you at home are relaxing!

Oh man the sandbox is boring. Was there in 03-04, 06-07. Stay safe brother

God bless you brother and stay safe. I had a 66 back in the day and had more fun with that fish than I could ever tell. I had my parents sell it when I went off to basic training because I was still making payments on it. I am glad you are smart enough to hang onto yours. Such a cool car.

USAF.... 4yr and done. Don’t consider myself a “veteran”. Close to 3yrs at Minot AFB. Worked in the GP mech shop for 4mos then was picked up for a mobile maintenance team out in the missile field. Last year they sent me out to the end of the Aleutian Islands. About 9 mos into that prison sentence with alcohol privileges, one night both surveillance aircraft and all 4 refuelers and all support staff vanished into the night...... Desert Storm kicked off shortly thereafter. I was worried about my release date being put on indefinite hold (a lot were) but apparently the usaf had plenty of wrench benders and I left AK in March of 91 as planned...

You signed that check, you're a vet. Not a combat vet, but a veteran just the same. Take the time to support veteran causes when you can, how you can. I have friends who are combat vets and sometimes they just need to talk. Those are the times to listen because sometimes they just need to be heard.

The Dale was a DLG correct? I had a ship mate that was stationed on the Dale , talked about it all the time.
