Just pulled the 318 out of my 76 D100 and it turns out it is a warranty block. The background on the truck is it was a CalTrans roads department truck. It was originally outfitted with a 318 HD option. It’s rumored that the 318 HD had 360 heads and intake and possibly steel cranks.
When we yanked it I was anxious to check the heads for a 360 casting but they turned out to be 2843675 castings that came on 1968-74 318’s and had 1.78” intake valves. Initial thoughts was that the heads must have been replaced because it did have the 360 intake manifold in place.
I looked at the block next. It was casting in 1971 and does not have any numbers on the pan rail.
Well, regardless, I am putting a hot little 318 in it and a performance built trans. The only thing wrong with this engine and trans is two ears on the flex plate sheered off. It made a weird noise and it was just my excuse to build a spare 318 up with Speedmaster sheafs and intake along with Comp Cams valvetrain and flat tops.
I’m thinking about putting a flex plate on this thing and put it in a 1973 318 Duster I have. Maybe I’ll put it up for adoption?
Cutrently having a heck of a time with alternators. Bought the AR Engineering Denso brackets and tried 2 separate Densos that were too big and a square back that was too big. I ground a tiny bit off the square back and it is sooo close but doesn’t touch and allows for the use of the original belt.

Did you buy that truck on CL about a year ago?
I saw one like it for sale, and I was interested in it.

Ive had it for about 2.5 years. About a year and a half ago I was going to sell it because a 1973 340 / 4 speed Duster fell in my lap and just needed to be finished off.
I put it up for sale and continued to drive it. It started making a thumping noise from the bellhousing (turned out to be the flex plate) and decided not to sell it like that. Around the same time I bought some Speedmasters on sale. I had a spare 318 block and 340 crank. As always I have a buckle of small block parts laying around so I decided to build it. I have a friend who has a trans shop and he had a customer who had a 727 built for a stroker. That customer decided to go with a big block so I got this well built trans for $900. Deal!
At this point I’m just going to keep the truck. I’ll be giving my TDI Jetta Wagen to my 16 year old daughter and daily drive the truck.
Further plans are to replace the 2.71 gears with 3.21’s. I have all the parts to rebuild the suspension too.
Until I need paint and body money for my 70 cuda it’s a keeper.

The way things are nowadays I thought you were going to say ‘Dude, that was five years ago!’ LOL
My memory… you know the rest.
I thought that was it, since it was orange and the ad said it was a former CalTrans truck. IIRC it was in pretty good shape, and that’s always been my favorite body style of Mopar trucks.

This is the duster that was prompting the sale of the truck. Just decided to stick it out and do both.

No, I’m east aways, in Texas

I believe I only put it on Craigslist in San Diego and LA.
I’m from Oklahoma and should be moving to Decatur, TX when my agencies Human Resources gets to work on my transfer.

Wow, small world!
Yeah at that point I was looking all over CL for a truck not just Texas. Looking forward to another Mopar guy here, doesn’t seem to be very many.

What parts you in down there? I am from the Oklahoma City area and have a network of Mopar people there. About an hour north of the Red River on I-35 there is a big Mopar swap meet, races and show at Thunder Valley Raceway in Noble, OK on June 11. Southern Plains Mopar Festival. Maybe my D100 and 340 Duster will be there along with my Dads B and E-bodies.

Right at the end of the first video you can hear a “tug-a-tug-a-tug-a” sound. It got louder when it got warm and you could hear it really good when down by the inspection cover.

I’m outside San Antonio and belong to a club, but there doesn’t seem to be a high concentration of Mopar heads in CenTex or SoTex.

Looking forward to meeting up with the Cowtown Mopar Club in DFW.

That last picture is how you replace the plugs on your header equipped big block A body!

This is the only thing wrong with the drivetrain, other than tiny little intake valves and low compression pistons.

The engine is loaded up and heading to the Oklahoma along with my 70 cuda. I’ll probably end up sticking the engine and trans in my 73 Duster parts car.

Finally got the engine in. Had to wait on parts and time. Still waiting on some parts to fire it up and break it in so it will probably be another week or so. I also need to hook up some gauges, install some new u-joints, wiring, ....
