I use a Long Shifter for racing it never jams works great. I couldn't see using it on the street down shifting doesn't work well. Just my 2 cents.

hi, the long shifter is a very good piece!! far better quality vs other inline shifters!! you can down shift them. I've used hurst shifter 3 for long time, went to jerico trans, installed long shifter. I have no trouble up or down shifting with the long shifter. like anything else, you have to be good at it.

I am installing the v gate I have had for years. With the 4 speed hump in a duster is there much trimming that needs to be done?

The V-gate, which I like extremely well, was one of the luxuries included in the purchase of my Barracuda. Unfortunately it did need some mods to the tunnel hump. Some of the mods went a bit overboard I believe, but hey, Big Bill was not a little guy.
In the pictures you can see the hump hole has been modified in all directions. Some of it cut out of the front and passenger sides and the flange folded down in the rear and driver side. The vertical areas have not been altered.
You can see how close things are underneath in the crappy picture. Also note the cross member had been notched and one bolt shortened.
I feel if fitted from the top and taking your time some of these alterations could be minimized.

It doesn't look anything like what you guys show as a v-gate looks very similar to what you guys are calling a Mr gasket ram rod Except the side of the stick says Hurst on it and the reverse lock out is a "T" handle. I know it was called a v-gate 1 when I ordered parts for it one time. Oh ya I bought it new so no one swapped sticks on it

Yours is a Hurst Ram Rod. There is no such item as a Hurst Vertigate; Vertigate was made by Mr. Gasket. Some of their parts are interchangeable.

not entirely true. i have both a hurst and a mr gasket vertigate. they are the same shifter, just one has a hurst handle and the other a mr gasket. they were both made with the handles they have on them.

the hurst one was set up for an e body originally.

Perhaps I can help here folks. The Vertigate or(v-Gate) was originally designed by George Hurst and Bill Faison. They were quickly updated as feedback from the PS community (in particular Bill Jenkins) pointed out the flaws in rod design. Several years went by and Hurst engineering decided to completely redesign the Vgate when racers were still not satisfied (actually the racers had moved on to the Lenco at that time). They throw was dramatically shortened, the main body stiffened and the mechanism mirrored the current SS2 in size. These became the Ram-Rod and were somewhat hit or miss in popularity. Fast forward to when Hurst and Mr Gasket merged, the ram-rod was long gone but Mr Gasket still had the tooling for the Vertigate and now had rights to the Hurst name...bingo Hurst vertigate. They were minor changes over the years (ramrod II had the flat reverse rod., RR1 had the red knob, VGate boots changed etc.) If you look at the current V-Gate it hasnt changed much (perhaps made a little cheaper), but its design was given a final overhaul by Leonard Long years ago who really brought it up to its potential. BUT if you look at the CURRENT epitome of stick shifted drag racing you will see that actually the Ram-Rod concept is closer to what is being used in PS these days than the Vgate. (IE Liberty-5)

My personal opinion is the Ram-Rod is superior in that the throws are much shorter, its simpler, its smoother, the gate is closer to the handle, and if it matters the body is much smaller.

fyi - I started racing a stick in 1977 and havent stopped since. My daily driver in High school was a 1973 Duster 340 the I put a Ram-Rod in and loved it (I have a pic of the shifter in that car Ill post). Ive run every shifter known to man in just about every configuration. For the last 15 years (retired now) I have raced a SS/L Chevy II (oh no a Chevy!) with a Jerico and Long shifter. Three pedals please.

I still have the stock bench seat shifter in my 70 Swinger 340. I have a spare competition shifter mechanism just in case. I have been thinking about a short shifter, but at this point It is just a thought.

I just installed the ramrod on a A-body 833. Went together easy enough. I will post more pictures when I fit this into chassis. Will report if any floor or cross member cutting is needed.
Reverse rod wont be installed till after trans is bolted up.
The A-body bracket used and levers are shown next to transmission so you can see how these
bolt up. It uses 3/8" spacers between A-body mounting bracket and shifter. Looks like chrome stick is 1/4" closer to your knee than the stock stick. To be continued.

this thread is EXACTLY why i LOVE FABO!!! the amount of talent, knowledge and experience within the ranks of the members of this site continues to amaze me. and a special thanks to DURNEY. i love hearing stories about the history and evolution of the various vendors that i use to follow religiously when i was a young mopar street racer in high school. i have a collection of the old "window stickers" that these vendors would send you no matter what you bought from them. the stickers looked great on the back passenger window of my "new" 68 formula S. they made me feel like a "real" drag racer.

You say the V-gate is a small pain on the street? Well in my DD Id have to disagree(lol). It was a major pain. When I was a kid I wanted one so bad, so when I had the opportunity to buy one cheap a few years ago from a guy at the track who was about to throw it as far as he could, I jumped on it.Turns out it needed a rebuild. After the rebuild, I got it all set up and working real nice. Then I realized something; They work fabulous when up-shifting. Not quite so fab. when ,coming back down.And when your sliding around and trying to grab a gear, well lets just say it was an experience. Anyway, I got tired of it and replaced it with an old Mr.Gasket Bang Shifter,H-pattern,that I had previously been using. That was 10 years ago. The V-Gate is still on the shelf. The Bang is still working great, now with 1/2 rods.

I believe I just picked up a Mr. Gasket bang shifter the other day. Do you know where I could find the rods for it? Do you happen to have a pic of your setup?

I made my own rods, longer because of theset back. It only works if you have buckets.I mean I seriously back-set the stick. Probably over 7 inches. I put it right beside my thigh, upper arm vertical, forearm horizontal, ball in my palm. I haven't missed a shift since I did this.

There's a few things I have to do to change from my regular Hurst shifter to my vertigate. The vertigate I just built my first second third fourth rods as they are straight and easy to make. The reverse Rod is the same on mine. Although I have to flip the ear over upside down on the reverse on the transmission for the vertigate. And for whatever reason I have to switch the ears on the first second third fourth for the vertigate as well just the way the rog lineup... Not flip the 1st 2nd 3rd 4th over but just switch them...

I just took the shifter back out as I'm driving it on the street more and downshifting isn't as smooth. And for me being a tall guy the shifter gets in the way of my right foot going from the gas pedal to the brake (it's actually my right knee that gets pinned up against the shifter when I go from pedal to pedal). Which kind of becomes dangerous.. the bracket puts the shifter forward a couple inches and over towards the driver a couple inches and it doesn't swing out of the way like a normal shifter does...
If it was dedicated to the dragstrip I would leave it in there because I only have to take my foot off the gas and put it on the break once...

My '69 Dart is street, I have the stock factory Hurst Mystery shifter. It was a great shifter back then, and still is today. Got a rebuilt one from Brewer.
