Where do I Drill My Bung-Hole?

I wanna run a 1/4" Fuel-Return Line along-side the 5/16" line for Fuel-Boiling reasons...
in my '65 Barracuda with a 273 2bbl manual pump.
The Pickup in the Tank doesn't have the extra return nipple So,
1) Will I have to Drill into the Tank for the Return?
2) Is the Location in this Picture a good place to do that?
3) Does the Return drip from the top? or Must it be Submerged in the Fuel on the inside?

It is likely better to run it down into the fuel but you can enter it "high" I would NOT drill it. use a sharp tapered awl to make a hole. This will "roll" tank material in and make a strong area that is easier to weld/ braze etc

You can use an inspection mirror in the sender hole to be sure you are not intruding on some interior "piece." I would NOT use 1/4. I would use at least 5/16 especially if there is EVERY a chance you will run EFI or a larger HP engine. (Mistake I made)

Lots of ways to do this but BE AWARE of fumes. I would stand it on the back edge, fill it with water near to the top and then you can weld/ braze/ solder

Yeah, I suppose This would be the Fastest Way to get er done. It's Easy enough to find a 3/8" out 1/4" in pickup
and the Sock fell off my crappy pickup in the tank anyway.

and I think I'll take the advise of 67Dart273 and use my existing 5/16" line for the Return and Run a New 3/8" Line to the Pump...

That's a mistake, IMO. Even a 1/4 return with a MANUAL pump is a bad idea without "some" sort of orifice restriction. I just got done converting my friend's Chevy truck to a return system, using the vapor return line as a solid fuel return. I used a simple return filter with an orifice in the return. Using even a 1/4 return without an orifice on a manual pump will lower the pressure and volume a good bit. You can do that with an electric pump, because they have enough volume and pressure so as not to need an orifice, but just the regulator.
 
I have Orificed Filters already and I found a 3/8" to 5/16" Brass Reducer in My Box tonight for the New Pickup.
Gonna grab some 1/4" line tomorrow for the Return Line.
 
My motor is so huge, and I never run less than WFO, even at stop lights, so I just routed the return line into the air horn on the carburetor. Stepped the mains down 2 sizes and life has never been better. Brick on the accelerator, and I just dance the clutch to show those kids in the school zone what success in life will bring you.

My right foot gets bored now so I just kicked through that rust hole in the floor board and rest it on the collector and the heat keeps it from falling asleep.

Oddly enough, I never have to add oil anymore. See? It fixed that pesky ring problem with attendant oil consumption, too! I should be a tech writer at Hot Rod ragazine.
 
I was thinking the filler tube idea as well... Also drilling it kind of at a downward angle... Sometimes those aftermarket rings and seals on those gas tanks don't always work so well..
The triple R can take the time to manufacture a timing gear for a slant six you can surely drill a hole. LOL...
 
I've been meaning to ask the OP if he's gotten to run that 318 iron single plane intake and if so how well it worked out on the 273. I've got some old long time family friends who have recently joined the 273 club and are looking at intake upgrades.

I Freshened-Up My 273 Heads So I had to stay with the Original Intake for them. Your 318 Intake is sitting on a Shelf...
I was gonna buy the 302 Swirl Heads but 66FS talked me out of that.
