CAR HUNT! or BOF & me car shopping!

Nice a 64 cant wait to see what is left of it. 4 speed or auto? I love rowing gears.

It's auto! Has a 318 in it now. Current owner has not had running. He had to take it and the valiant to be able to buy a mustang he was wanting.
Can you imagine someone offering a deal like that to you?! WOW 3 whole cars then only having to sell or scrap a mustang! LOL
But looks like some work though.

john i always look forward to seeing all of your postings, when did't post i lost something too look forward too when logging on.i don't post offen due to poor spelling & typeing on my part.but i'm hear every day looking at posting.also want to know how you made out on the two geo.

hey demonmike70!
The metros I got at a good deal for in the hood of around $500 from a mechanic friend of mine. You can usually find them running and ugly but needing front end welding for around $500 each if ya look real hard.

The red 92 sold quickly after repairs. No money spent on repairs except 2 rolls of welding wire. The good tires and rims I got from the blue 94. It sold in the hood of around $1100 after about 6 hours of being up for sale.

The blue 94 I had to scrap due to hand injury I'm still dealing with. I couldn't work on the car and needed a house payment. So it was scrapped for $375. It went to the scrap yard after I installed a new $60 fuel pump. The injury to the hand happened right after that pump was installed. So I lost that $60 and labor on that car, but still made bank on the whole package.
I still have a rare new in box hood and a huge amount of nos parts still in boxes to sell on feebay! I'm thinking there is about another 2-5 hundred in nos parts to sell now.

Have a great day today demonmike70!

Hey you guys. I've been to a few auto auctions the past 4-5 days.
I have had 3 buyers (1 being a major dealer) call me last week wanting mini vans.
Even before that happened, everyone I got would sell on the same day I put it up for sale. Not including the windstar we are driving in the salt right now.
Anyway, as soon as this past Aug I started noticing, good used units under $2000 were becomming hard to find mini vans or otherwise.
Well now it used to be about lets say 10-15 mini vans in a 100 unit lot for auction. At least 30% or more of those min vans are mopar. Most of them sellin at or slightly higher than I could sell for. (Retail private seller price)
Keep in mind USUALLY when I put something up for sale the price is usually amoung the lowest for that make and model on CL if not THE lowest. I lower $100 a day till it sells. So usually my idea of selling is being gone with cash in hand 48 hours after putting up for sale.
Now after this weekend...
Lets say 25-30% fewer units up for auction, 1-2 mini vans total half or all being mopar. At each auction I was seeing only 1 min van it being mopar or 2 total at sale with 1 or both being mopar.
It's the beginning of tax season we all know. I'm sure you realize it's a good time of year to sell. Like I said before, in about 2 weeks you could put a chian saw motor on a shopping cart, call it a car, cheap price, IT"S OTTA HEAH!!! SOLD!!! Buyers beware this time of year. The last weeks 150 unit auction had less than 75 units. The ones that were comming through were looking like bottom of the barrel too. They were in all likely hood units that were at dealers lots so long due to the being crap, the dealers dumped them into auction to try to better the quality on their lots. Sell theirs and buy others on the same day! (stock rotation makes the lot look busy) But even the junk recycling through the auction centers was selling like hot cakes at retail price (private party) or higher! WOW!

Here is what has been learned then;
1: More and more people now are keeping and fixing their old cars.
2: Used car prices on units that would sell off a lot for $2000 or less are going up in price from $100-$600 above what they were going for in last AUG and now are being priced around $2500 retail (private party, more if retail dealer lot). They are now selling for $1500 and up at auction, you being able to sell private party at around $2000. These same units are becomming so hard to find actual "name brand" car dealers who know me are calling and asking I find them for the dealer too!
3: Used private party units selling for $1500-2000 are becomming hard to find. The ones I have been researching at that price usually have 1 of the following; engine/tranny/electrical problems and would need to be towed away and repaired!
4: There is a major gap between junk cars and the above units in price. Scrap just went down here. That left more than just a few scratching their heads around here. There isn't any junk cars available anymore to fix up. I went from hauling say 5 a week beginning last summer to 1 in 5 months this past fall!
5: Did I mention that the biggest segment buying that extra car at tax season? Parents buying the kids first car who can't afford new ones. As a seller of cars once in a while I got to say, I wish all sellers would let people know what all is wrong with the car they are selling. Full discloser as far as what you know. If I'm lucky enough to have one for sale that's not heading for the junk yard, I always try to drive them around for at least a month. Check it all out and work some bugs out with minor repairs. That way when I sell it, I can provide a list of good and bad of the car. I always suggest what would be my next repair too and provide either parts or estimates on those repairs for the buyers. I also print out a KBB print out of "Bankers pricing" and usually print out 2 or 3 others that are currently available on CL for them to compair.
It will help you sleep at night knowing you sold something to someone who needed safe transportation. You will also get the rep for being overly honest and that's a good thing.

If buying this time of year, or any time for that matter, I don't try to dicker down pricing on the phone before viewing a purchase in person. It tics the seller off. I will however ask them on the phone what would be their next repair if they were keeping it. Also ask many questions. The more you ask the more you learn. Also if it's a scam sale they will trip up in their lies before the phone call is over. Try to view some pics before going to the unit in person.

Just some nuggets I've noticed. I hope we can somehow use them to help us all here to make better purchase decisions, No matter if you are keeping or flipping. Any make or model.

Mini vans though, especially mopar ones are HOT HOT HOT for resale as long as the rockers aint rusted and they are 2000 and newer. They have to be cleaned and detailed too. Full size pick ups any make and Durangos for some reason are on they way down in price fast! V-8 in them? Even harder to sell, but getting cheap to buy!

I'll keep beatin the bushes and yall keep it between the ditches!
:salut:

You are correct on the value of minivans. A friend here, who bought a condo in Orlando a couple of years back, thought he might buy a minivan instead of renting when he is down there. Last year, a running 03 Caravan was around $1500-2000, and this year $4000 isn't enough.

Dealer there echoed what you're saying. Everyone is looking good used instead of new.

hey john was just wondering about the two geo because here in south side of chicago i can't get that type money.hell i had hard time getting rid of clean low mileage 95 neon...let it go for 900.that why i only flip a car every few years now.i have even stoped side work on cars for the most part. i don't have place to do it any more.one of reasons i love your postings....just sucks that you have to work that hard to make a living.i am very lucky , after 17 years as a chrysler tech. and so many dealer closeing up out here to "fall into a new line of work " as road tech. for toyota fork lifts.i lot of the guys i work with have in & out work or working for less.hope the hand heals up soon.

Reputation John, You have many great years of life behind you and ( and trying ones) you formed the foundation of respect and wisdom of how the cow eats the cabbage  (is the old words that come to mind)
Creativity is a blessing and a giving trait John
Well that is what I was taught any way :smilebox:
Arther and age comes in to our life and we adapt my friend, You have seen better days and worse days I bet'cha..
Let me say that I open my eyes to a new day every day now :coffee2: Now I am better at it then I was as Arther came a Call'en.

Just when you think all is well is when it changes, We change with change.
I don't have a remedy for it, but I can pretend I do for myself some time this works
I did some linesman work for about 7 months and the boss was a gambler and never was close by, I started climbing ladders to young they say..

Good words memike . . . life's lessons come when not asked for, and in our solutions we grow. We have to deal with ourselves in order to deal with others. John, you have had a rough time of late, looking for a little break in the weather. Well just remember that even if there are clouds in life, there is always a sun shining behind them. Family and true friends are always there. Do what you do well, and I don't mean fix the unfixable. But continue to put a smile on many people's faces. It is appreciated. Rog

1963 Shasta Compact.

Should look great on back of the 64!
The thing is like 10.5 feet long!!!
When the tires are full of air, I can lift the toung and move the thing by hand. It's about the same weight as my 5x10 utility trailer was.

See ya in the camp grounds this year. Time to get my Shasta wings on! Should be great to hang out in at car shows too!:glasses7:

I'm thinking that green will be going teal soon!:D

One door closes, another one opens. Another one of lifes nuggets.
Wish this ones door opened and closed. Right now I have to climb through rear window to open the door. Hope I get that fixed soon!:banghead:
Look at the wood laminates used back then! WOW!

This would be the A Body in the camper world so I went ahead and posted it! Now where did BOF's trailer hitch go? Now, Lump or wagon?
I know! Junk Yard run for another hitch off a cherokee!
That way each of the cars will have a turn!

I'm wore out from digging that thing out of the ground. Yard Dawgs truck was used again for it's 4x4 to go up the drive to the trailer. His fuel pump went out right there. Hooked up, free wheeled cross narrow bridge and out into street. Camper bottomed out in crappy ditch of a driveway and tore off the back metal skin from bottom to taillights! DANG!!Hooked chain to Foto to YD's Ram hooked to camper. Drug the whole pile down to my house bou 1/8 mile away. Hand pushed camper in driveway. Loaded YD's truck on FOTOs back and hauled him and his truck back home! I told him we were even now so I wouldn't pay him the $50 for towing my camper cause I didn't want to have to hit him with my $150 tow bill! LOL
I told him it could have been worse. I broke my camper. He broke his truck. Both of us got a tow for free.
He said hell yeah, lot worse. Next week I was leaving in that truck for NC to see my son!
Good thing then that ya broke down at my house instead!!

PS: our 01 windstar got sold this past weekend. The lady who bought it sold me her 01 windstar so she wouldn't have to drive it home! Just another weird car pickers story. Hers had 70K more miles than ours and was just a shade of green darker than ours. Yes hers is up for sale now too! LOL

Have a great day today FABO!
John.

Thanks GF65,
Unfortunately, It seems my luck is holding.
Yep Bad.
After tearing the back out removing it from the old property…..
I went out this Am to air up flats so I could move it closer to my garage for jack stands and some work (like new tires and wheels painted)
Well, Air to only 30 (specs 35) turn and walk away to put up air lines and….
BLAM!:eek:ops:
I turn to see a big smoke cloud rising from the pass. Side of the camper. Hmmm… must of blow a tire…I wonder about damage, so I walk back down the drive to take a peek.
I turn the corner of the rig to see this!!
Glad I didn't have my face in it.
LIFE LESSON!! See the debris field? In a word....SAFETY-GLASSES!!:glasses7:
Use em!:prayer:

Have a great day today GF65!

Love those old camping trailers. beats sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag!!!

We swore off tents about 15 years ago and never looked back. I hate waking up wet not in a good way, So the pop ups are out for us too. We were spoiled for years with class C & A and new pull behinds as well. We have cheaper tastes now!:D

Very sweet addition to the show scene.

Can't wait till it and my 64 are nice enough and painted alike to go to shows with them both. Wouldn't that be livin the dream. All that would be missing is that old 60's style pull off on the side of the road along the Gulf coast. Boy those days are gone huh?! LOL
