I’ve posted about this on the fortrucksonly forum but I’ve been unsuccessful... I’ve been looking for a D100 for some time now. Being in NW TN, there aren’t many running options around that are solid. Given my current place in life, I don’t need another long term project. I really want a solid running platform to mess with. With that said, I have found one in Los Angeles, CA. After several weeks messaging and talking to the owner, I have bought my dad and I a couple one way tickets on 4-26!! My plan is to pick up the truck and head to Pomona for the night. I really need to take a day to go over the truck before we head back across the country. Does anyone have any contacts that would allow me to rent a shop space to replace the obvious before we strike out? I’ve called all the parts stores in the area in hopes of someone there knowing of a place but no luck... I would really like to service all the fluids and replace all the rubber lines, belts, hoses... etc. We may still not make it but at least we would have a better chance. If it breaks we will just haul it the rest of the way... Thanks in advance!!

Here’s a couple pics since I know how everyone feels about pics! It’s a long shot but we will see if we can make it 1,600+mi!! Should make for some great memories at the very least!!

Used to live next door to Pomona in Ontario and Dang, I know that Gangsta Hood where there trucks at, Lots of members here from that area and surely someone will hook ya up if they see this, there's a guy from Chino which isn't far from Pomona on here all the time..Gud Luk!

Thanks! Hopefully someone in the area will see this and know of a place we can use for a bit. It would sure be cool if we actually made it all the way back!

Pomona may be near LA, but it ain't LA...

The truck is located 9mi from LAX. I’m not familiar with the area at all so I contacted Steve Legens of Legens Hotrod. He’s a local here but is out that way fairly often. He suggested Pomona was a nice place, would be on our path home, and might possibly be a place to find somewhere to let us work on the truck a bit.

Speaking of road trips. Back in the 1990s a guy I knew bought a '70 Coronet R/T convertible near Boston. He and his sons drove it back with the top down the whole way to central California...

I adjusted the title a bit... Just looking at the map, all the different names run together. Thought it was all part of LA...

That would have been a great road trip to talk about years later! My dad and I are not collectors by any stretch but between the two of us we have 7 old Mopars we’ve picked up over the years. We’ve never bought one running that we didn’t make it back home in. The brown Duster you see made it 5.5hrs (380mi) with no issues. We did at least have another vehicle... This trip, however, is on another level! 1,600+mi with the owner telling me no way he would try it. But we have to...

I drove an unknown 1969 Polara wagon home from Sacramento (about 160 miles) in 2001. The seller had pulled it out of a tow yard so he didn't even know much about the car. Made it home without incident...

What about the truck scares the seller about driving it that far?

That's a long way to go cross country with an old vehicle that you don't know, best to put it up on a car trailer and tow it back.

Then you can get all the bugs out of the truck on your own time and terms.

Getting stranded out on the highway is an expensive deal and major inconvenience.

Wagons are awesome!

I’m not sure what has him spooked about the truck. I asked for several videos of the truck running, driving, and shifting through the gears. I don’t hear anything that would concern me. Obviously there could be other major issues not seen or heard in short videos but with a little time under the truck I don’t feel scared to give it a try!

I certainly can’t argue... That would definitely be the smartest, easiest, and likely the cheapest way to get it here. But there’s just no adventure in that! And I was quoted $3k to ship it... We will likely spend that on this little escapade but we’ve both taken the week off to spend the time together just to see if we can make it. Safety is my only real concern... short of that, we will make memories to talk and laugh about.

Yes, the wagon was cool, but the restoration would have been costly. Drove it for about five years. Replaced it with a '79 3/4 ton club cab long bed Power Wagon. Then replaced the '79 about six years after that with the 2000 Durango. The Polara gave up its drive train to my old '67 Barracuda fastback. The '79 was shipped off to Iowa. Still have the 2000, but would like to replace it with a new one. Maybe at the end of the year. I'd get one of the premium AAA tow packages and have contacts set up along the trip in case anything happens.

Pretty cool progression from a wagon that was pulled from a yard! Good luck on the new Durango!

We have family on standby ready to load up and come get us if something happens along the way and we can’t find a hauler near by.

@ckjarr we have a shop in Covina, right next door to Pomona. Has a lift. But it is behind our crew chiefs house and he owns the property. I could ask him tomorrow if he’d rent you some time and space. How much time are you looking for?

Not to mention it’s getting hot. Need plenty of antifreeze as well as drinking water, not pop.

If you wouldn’t mind asking that would be great! It’s really hard to know for sure on the time but I’m thinking 4hrs minimum, maybe a full day... If he’s not comfortable with it I understand. I don’t mind sharing my personal contact so we can talk directly if it would help. Thanks!!

Thinking ahead I had already thought of plenty of drinking water along with enough fluid to fill the coolant system should something fail on the road.

I will pose the question tomorrow and see what he says. Nicest guy ever and the only reason he’d say no is if he doesn’t have room. He works on a lot of customers cars and all of our race trucks.

Thanks so much! Tried to PM you my info but your box is full.

Should be plenty of room now. But I’ll reply here tomorrow and we can move forward from there.

If the owner is telling u that , I`d be worried !!
He may be covering his a$$ !

If it will go an 60 miles, it will go 1,600 miles. Change oil filter, oil, check brake fluid, tires, tire pressure, coolant. Enjoy!

That’s definitely a possibility... Just speaking with him I’m getting the feeling he bought the truck with big plans but little knowledge on how to carry them out. I really think he just doesn’t trust it... I’m leaning more towards 66fs’s thoughts on it! I know it starts, runs and idles smooth with no ticks, knocks, or rattles, and shifts through all the gears. We’re gonna give it a try!
