Hi

So I recently changed the the shifter from a home-made thing to a B&M cable. I also changed the oil and filter while I was at it. Now the car needs al lot of RPM to barely move when its cold, and the shifting is really wierd. Like suddenly shifting to neutral while driving, then back again.

It gets better as the temps rise, but never 100%

There is no kickdown cable, I have a lokar lying around. To begin with the bolts that holds the oilpan was tightened, but after a short drive I had to tighten them more. This seemed to make the problem slightly better after re-tightening. Now they are as tight as they will go though.

No oil is leaking, but at one time, while driving, there was a slight "puff" of smoke, smelled like hydraulic oil.

So any ideas? Wrong filter install? To much oil? Need the kickdown cable?
Not the most time to spend in the garage these days, but I can not get this problem out of my head.

the kickdown controls fluid pressure so DO NOT DRIVE IT WITHOUT A KICKDOWN HOOKED UP . a few miles can fry your trans .
get a kickdown hooked up and adjust it properly and pray that you never fried it . or if you need to drive , tie it all the way back .

My experience has been leave the tranny fluid alone,
Once changed they were never right.

I see, well I barely left the graage 2 times before deciding not to risk it. Hopefully I havent fried anything.
Ill get to mount the Lokar then. But there was no kickdown on the car before and it worked okay I guess. Tie the linkage way back you mean?

Thanks for the reply :)

The throttle pressure linkage or cable (kickdown) should be hooked up and operational before the car is ever moved. Hopefully, you didn't do any permanent damage. However, if it was unattached before then the transmission is probably in need of repair. No, don't tie it back. Get it hooked up right. These aren't Chevys. They cannot operate without that linkage without burning up the transmission......and in very short order.

Might have been tied back before i change shifter. I also had the carb of at some point so I probably removed anything holding the linkage back. So I take it from the replies here that I need to install the linkage and pray there are no permanent damage :)

That's about right. But, if the transmission has slipped at all as you describe, It's been damaged "to some degree". Best you can do is get it all hooked up, adjusted properly and run it and see.

Exactly. When's lobster season? Do they UPS good? lol

my lobster season opens the end of April , shipping lobster is a so expensive in small amounts it crazy . if i were to send you 25 pounds it would cost over 400.00 bucks . i would send you some F O C if it was feasible .

Oh LAWD!

Rusty is right I fried the front clutches in my 904 because the kick down linkage wasn't adjusted proper and $850 later I learned my lesson.
Thank's to a good friend that rebuilt mine he explained how it all works and let me watch him rebuild it.

It really should have never been called "kickdown" cable or linkage. "Throttle pressure" is more accurate. Engine "throttle" is linked to transmissions hydraulic "pressure".
The aftermarket cables with bare metal sheathes can/have shorted to wiring at the A-bodies bulkhead connector. Good luck with it

Since you stated aftermarket shifter, then installed proper cable, then shifts better when you tighten pan bolts(shifter cable bracket should be attached with two of these), I would say cable adjustment is off. Refer to installation instructions.
