Source to locate correct distributor numbers per application?

If you are trying to be "restore" accurate, you have to be careful. It may be (not sure, just as EG) that some CA vehicles had different dist's than federally and also for different options. Some long about 70 / later had the electric retard on the vacuum advance.

how to tell if the distributor drive gear is installed correctly?

The facts are these, and we've joked about this. One member used to say, "the gear could point to China." You COULD do this: 1 Throw the gear in any old way 2 Throw the dist in either way 3 Pull no1 plug. Stick your finger in, bump the engine to find compression. When you JUST...

    Odd ignition and electrical problem

That sounds like the black ammeter wire. I would also be checking the ammeter for heat damage, loose connections, as well as the terminals in the bulkhead connector. That entire ammeter circuit can be a problem

    Riddle Me This

Actually the wire from the ignition switch to the relay COULD be quite small. That is a relay, and the yellow "start" wire simply activates the coil. The wire from the relay to the solenoid is a different story.

Getting started to work on my 1974 Dart Sport. I got questions

If you do not have a 74 service manual, send me a PM ("conversation") I have on digital I can copy, but you will need to mail me a thumb drive and return mailer.

Voltage rising then dropping? (67 Barracuda)

"Normal." No, it's not. It's a feedback loop in the wiring/ connections causing a cycling event. If you are using an old electro-mechanicall regulator, and it is not in the harness, then it's the VR out of adjustment, or needs replaced.
  7. 67Dart273

    Uh, NOPE

First time I saw something like that was about 1972. This was before silicone, and was then factory type resistor wires.

Remember that SB Mopar Hilborn intake "I used to have?"

I doubt it. Wasn't most Hilborn stuff aluminum? Whatever I do, or don't, it will be a long ways off. I need a house to live in, first

Voltage rising then dropping? (67 Barracuda)

Check for voltage drop first in the harness and then the ground circuit. To do this With key in "run" but the engine stopped. stab one probe of your meter directly into the top of the POS battery post. Stab the other into the IGN terminal of the voltage regulator, or if you can't get...

    ALERT !! Tragedy !! 67Dart273

Actually we are just getting a little closer to the starting line. Once the basement is cleaned out, or at least to the point we can maybe cover the lathe, etc, it will be time to demolish. Pull out ALL sheet rock insulation, and at least the upstairs wiring and maybe the basement...

    What is this Voltage Regulator

Several brands sold them, and Ma had one look-alike and maybe WAS the same they called and MP part. There is a huge controversy, "race only" etc etc, and the bit about "constant output" or whatever is EXACTLY what a VR is supposed to do. Only caveat with those is make SURE the case...

Couple more of the sled project HF winch mounted above, with a snatch block about knee level to allow more room when "up." and a small block on the sled. The return line does not actually move, is anchored to an eye at the floor level

Making some progress, and found a temp guy who is a real worker. Got the living room down to wood, along with the smaller bedroom, kitchen, and laundry, yesterday. It was the worst mess. Should get the main bedroom carpet out today. THEN it's on to the basement. Some photos Below...

    Odd ignition and electrical problem

You can not always tell by looking. Some short across wires due to overheating does not always show up on external appearance.

    Too Hot

You posted similar statement before about tubes breaking loose from fins. I am convinced that is what happened to my old original 273 rad. It was clean as a whistle and flowed lots of water yet would not cool

    Odd ignition and electrical problem

You likely either have some wiring hack someone did that is causing some sort of backfeed, or more likely some sort of cross between wires in the harness (such as melted from a previous short) that is causing this. If you do not have one go to MyMopar.com and download a free service...

    What is this Alternator

I tend to agree. What he is saying, is, this is NOT a native 69 / early type. It is or was, a 70/ later isolated field, sometimes incorrectly called a "dual field." You need to disconnect all connections, get a meter, and determine if the field is GROUNDED. If so you can get the...

Key issues with my newly acquired 69 Barracuda

The issues are all right in the switch/ lock cylinder, there is no connection, mechanically, to any lockouts, etc. All I can advise is to get it out, get it apart and examine it. You have a service manual? If not, go to MyMopar.com, they are free. You may have to accept Dodge vs...

    Alternator test procedure

Sorry this is NOT TRUE If you are going to ground one, it MUST be the GREEN wire that you disconnect. The light blue is switched 12V TO THE field, and by disconnecting and grounding the opposite field terminal (the one where the green was) you are causing full power through the field...

    Alternator test procedure

Don't discount the REST of it. I have found OPENS in the CHARGE WIRE/ ammeter circuit. In other words, the alternator / regulator were just fine, but the power could not get to the battery. Monitor voltage AT THE alternator stud. If it is way way high, but not charging, you have...

1970 Chevelle 396 HEI Ignition No Spark

If you cannot do anything else, pull the dist out lay it on a bench and find some alligator clip jumper wires. Consider pulling it apart if necessary and connect back with the jumpers and device a way to get power to it. These are essentially a Mopar 4 pin box all packaged up...

Can’t get 1968 BB to crank over

You either need a helper, or some wire, so someone can read the meter or watch the test light. "Rig" ANY wire you have including an extension cord so you have wire to reach from the rear battery to the front. Now you can test various places. First thing I'd do is do that or rig...

A scathing review of a POS and dangerous Klein tester

My best Fluke may not make it. It powers up with a new battery, but it was somewhat warm, and the battery leaked. The others I have in the basement are "smokey." So I thought I'd buy an inexpensive tester to get by until I get something better, or see about getting the Flukes cleaned...

    Benefit Auction for 67dart273

Unfortunately, not much, tho I do have a few leads to chase down. I've gotten most the kitchen, about all the living room, and quite a bit of the main bedroom cleaned out and the rug out of the living room. I've had 3-4 2 person teams that were essentially no-shows. One day before...
