Brakes - all of a sudden no stop

If no external leak the master cylinder piston is not pushing fluid due to internal leak/bypass (bad cups or bore). Also if pedal doesn't return all the way to the top the pistons cannot replenish fluid through the replenish port or it is blocked with sludge/ debris.

Am I just rusty or is this a problem?

Very typical of wet drum shoes. If a front drum, likely to yank steering wheel to that side. Brake fluid doesn't disappear in a closed system, you have a leak!

No Electronic box in pointless distributor

Lean Burn in my memory used 2 electronic pickups, one for starting ( maybe a fixed amount of retard?) and one that fed the electronic timing control. The distributors had no mechanical OR vacuum advance. There has got to be some electronic device somewhere firing the coil. Just my 2c

    489 8 3/4 Third Member Sure Grip?

As I suspected and you guys confirmed, it is a cone type. It seemed from the picture the case bolts went in from the ring gear side but I wasn't sure. It's claimed to be out of a 1972 Imperial, 3.23 ratio. it appears from all my reading here and elsewhere that the case dating method is not...

What to watch out for: '12 Crew Cab Cummins

You don't want to be engaging a "part time 4WD" (4 High) on a solid surface! It will put a serious bind in the drive train in a turn and possibly break something. If it indicates "4 Auto" also know as "full time 4WD" that's OK to engage anytime as that has a center differential. I differ on the...
