    Steering coupler's are different!

I'm putting this out there hoping for some help from the community. In the process of replacing and rebuilding my 67 dart manual steering column and coupler. I ordered what I thought was an exact replacement for my car. Well when I started to put the new coupler in there is a distinct...

    Removing Steering Shaft 1966 Barracuda

It's difficult for sure. It sounds like you have manual steering? If you have the steering shaft in place already and are trying to get the manifold around it, you'll have to remove the steering shaft first. It would be better not to pull apart the coupler because it's difficult to place the...

    three suspension questions

The problem with just throwing a u-joint style coupler on there is that you eliminate the ability of the steering shaft to take any fore/aft movement. The stock steering coupler actually can slide fore/aft a couple inches. Now, I don't think that the steering system needs to allow for that much...

    Turning back the clock

I believe you are correct about the steering box being moved for steering shaft (coupler) clearance. I had to move the box as far over to the left as I could to gain room for the larger tube hooker headers while fitting a hemi. By cutting the box mount off the frame and moving it outboard it...

    Steering Column Install help???

On the assembly line, the wheels were set straight ahead. That put the master spline of the steering gear on top center. Notch in edge of coupler identifies that master spline location on top. Spline at steering wheel end on top. Knocking the split pin through is to the engine side of the...

It didn't get hot enough to hurt the rubber or the grease, just 4 little tacks. I figure if it need to come apart I'd need a rebuild kit anyway so why not. Even remembered to put the small roll pin in at the top of the coupler.

The roll pin for the coupler to go onto the steering box, I cannot find it. The PB is on Jonestown road in the burg.

    408 going in

All right - will do. Oh yes- it is power steer. Holy smokes! I would say those did not fit. I do use spool mounts. Just did a new set for this block. I actually looked up header threads before I bought these JUST to confirm that they fit. It looked like there were plenty of happy...

How To Replace your Lower Column Bearing: Better and Cheaper!!!

When I did mine, I used an air chisel with a blunt end punch. It still took a little effort to get out but it finally did come out.

    steering wheel play

well the whole steering column is one piece. You will have to remove the 3 bolts on the firewall where the column goes through. Also the column support under the dash and the roll pin on the coupler. {you couls also technically leave the coupler housing on the sterring box and just remove the...

Excessive play in steering wheel ?

No do NOT do that. You need to rebuild it if it can be, (not too worn) or replace it. That is called the "steering coupler" You can buy rebuild kits various places, but the pin going through the steering column shaft, if that is worn, you have 'problems' Check carefully...

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Well did a lot of figuring out wiring yesterday afternoon and it was mostly usable just some corroded ends which I changed in the connectors. Runs like a beast now! The dual exh is insane. I cannot find the pin for the steering coupler any one know where to get one? Long story.

    Steering wheel upside down...

Thanks for all the comments on my original post. Thought I'd provide a follow up for anyone in the future performing a 'search' for steering wheel, column, coupler or roll pin. I ended up getting the coupler rebuild kit from ebay and pulling the column. I painted the coupler and stopped there...

    Stupid coupler question

Come to think of it, I just took the coupler out of the parts washer this evening. I thought it had a burr on it. Maybe it is a pin. I check tomorrow evening.

    removing steering coupler

Going from power to manual steering. Have removed the role pin and drilled out the other small pin on the manual steering box coupler. Is there a certain way to get the steering coupler off the shaft of the manual steering box. Thanks in advance. Bill

    Steering coupler's are different!

Put a roll pin in there. It's not necessary, but one thing that I did on both of my sons' cars was to drill/tap a hole in that area and put a screw in. I did this before I knew the factory had solved the problem in later years. It prevents the coupler from coming apart when removing the column.

    Steering shaft length

I don't recall the exact length. If I remember the manual steering is about 43". Power a few inches shorter. Power use a different coupler with smaller spline size. If you have the power steering shaft and coupler in your column it will fit. I have had some shafts that would slide or...

    Removing Steering Shaft Bearing

What is the easiest way to remove the lower steering shaft bearing? The plastic bearing at the end of the steering column just before it leaves the steering column and firewall and goes into the steering coupler. Does it come out toward the coupler or back through the firewall? The reason I...

    Father-Son 1974 Duster Project

This... But if it puts up a fight, first get the column out of it. There is a very small pin near the top of the coupler in one side. Drive it all the way through. That' what keeps the guts from popping out of the coupler. Other than that pry, tap etc. its just a big spline. I think it...

    steering column shift lever removal

Ok, I have the column out of my 72 Dart. And have removed the snap ring. I don't see how I can pull the shaft out from the coupler end, seeing how it's about a foot up in the shift tube. Suggestions? Thanks

How would tell if the freeze plugs need to be changed? They are blue now since I painted over them but they were gold prior and looked fine to me. I will check out how to replace these seals. Flywheel has not been resurfaced yet. I picked up a new coupler from Mancini so I will check it out...

    Power steering column rebuild...?

I was able to disassemble the lower end of the column, actually set a 5/16 nylock nut in there between the outer shell of the coupler housing and the shaft. Couple taps with a small punch and the pin was removed successfully. The pin in the lower end of the shaft was in there a little...

69 dart how to convert manual to power steering?

Don't buy this crap about steering columns. It's a collapsible style, and has plastic on the shaft to keep it in place. Just tap the shaft in till you have enough clearance. Put on your p/s only coupler. Line up the master spline, and slide the coupler onto the steering box splines. Tap in the...
