    correct! it is about 1/4 per side or 1/2" overall. to be stock length a body with big bp axles the housing has to be about 1/2 narrower.

    Might look at e body axles. would probably have to trim about 3/8 off each but would probably leave enough spline.(barely). being even longer than b body rearends will make it tighter wheel/tire clearance for an a body.     Be very careful with axle length especially with cone traclok or a powerlok with the 2 pc side gears or you will take the splines off the end of axle where they do not engage enough.paul

    Probably a front pinion bearing went first causing end play. then crunch. front bearing is the same as 12 bolt.ford 9" but not as heavy as the 742 cases.sometimes pinion nut backs of from driveline vibrations or reusing nut after seal change( seen lots of those in all rearends).paul

    pinion Depth

    if the pinion is not marked with depth it should be plus or minus spec on it(ie factory gears) then you go by that as the change from the factory zero dim which is 2.764 if memory serves.paul
