    Question for the machinists

My machinist does the sand paper method on heads needing only a very light amount of material removed. He uses a heavy duty belt sander lol just lays them on there and lets the sander do the work. I think he marks the low area with dye-chem or however its spelled. Kind of like guide coat on body...

their the same. maybe different compression by a tiny bit but not much. heads, block, crank, pistons, all the same

    Cleaning a crankshaft

Depending on how bad it is just get you some ultra fine steel wool i think its 0000 grade? I used it and it worked excellent. Only cost $4 and now i have a bag of ultra fine steel wool that i can also use to get the haziness off of chrome without polishing and clean overspray off of glass and...

    302 heads on a 360 magnum block

They say 95% of the magnum heads on the road today are cracked and nobody knows any different. I dont see what the big deal is about it. My machinist said they dont recomend fixing it because its so un noticable. Unless its a major crack that causes coolant leaks or vacuum leaks id run them on...

    magnum heads

Yep thats true. They usually crack between the exhaust valves. They say 95% of them on the road are like that but nobody notices it and they dont usually fix it when changing head gaskets just a surface and throw em back on. Atleast thats what the machine shop we use says to do. I got lucky and...

    magnum heads

New correct magnum head bolts, correct oil through pushrods, intake for the magnums vertical bolts, and i think thats it. Oh and make sure that your lifters are oil through type also

    la heads on magnum block

Out of the box untouched magnum heads vs. La heads the magnums flow more. Otherwise the magnum head swap would be pointless other than the smaller chamber and 1.6 rockers witch will probably be easier and cheaper to put on la heads and have them shaved.

    la heads on magnum block

No. Well they can i guess if you get an early block that still has the oil feed hole for the rocker shaft. Or drill tge hole out on later blocks

    340 No low end power

thats a single plane intake right? if so that may be costing you some low end power and giving it back to you up top.

    X J or TA Heads

Do the one head have the offset rockers? If the intake rocker isnt offset its not a t/a head. I can see someone putting one t/a head on it unless they had both and somehow ruined one so had to go back to an original.

    J head max compression

sorry you posted before i was done typing lol with 98 i would say your ok but still a little on the edge for my taste.

    J head max compression

depends on what fuel your going to run and how much timing. for pump gas i would say it was to high because you would be right there on the edge. i was told 10-10.5:1 for cast iron and 11:1 for aluminum as a reasonable safe max but i would keep it around a full point lower than those numbers...

Testing Oil Pressure with a Comp tester?

But all the uses you listed are for air applications not oil. To let air out you just push the relief valve and its empty but how would you drain the oil? Also and i dont know if this makes sense but, since air compresses wouldnt the gauge be calibrated for air applications? Oil being a liquid...

Testing Oil Pressure with a Comp tester?

Im sure you could but it might ruin the gauge, its made for gases so the passages are small and getting the oil back out might be tough. I could be wrong though. But for all the trouble it would take you can buy those cheap oil pressure gauges at parts stores for $15ish dollars and then you can...

72 318 with 360 heads, marks in pistons

If it out then plastigauge your bearings since this will give you a chance to inpspect them for wear also. Check ring gaps and overall condition. A gasket set is cheap and so is a replacement oil pump.

    magnum heads mistake.

    318 and 5.2's Same flywheel?

    Rear Mail Seal

You'll need to lift the motor up high and make sure you don't stretch any wires or hoses. Also make sure the fan doesnt get into the radiator. Remove the pan, oil pump and main bearing cap. I like to trim the side peices off the half of the seal so i can put some silicone on it and slide it in...

    Hyperutectic VS Forged pistons

the piston type (cast, hyper, forged) won't gain you any power in its self. the power gain comes from the shape, I.E. domed, dished, and shape of the two for flame travel and quench. if its just a street motor with no power adders for seen in the future then id go cheap and just get cast...

10:1 would be your static compression, those numbers represent dynamic. Thats all i know about it lol but dynamic is supposed to be lower

    Rebuilt 360 ?

Do the cylinders still have crosshatching? And do any of the rods have excessive movement when you wiggle them? When i checked my 440 the other day it was the same situation. Clean as a new motor under the valve cover and spun free. I guess someone had pulled it for a project and decided they...

Small block bolt in cams ?

I just put a .470 lift howards cam with a 104 intake centerline and 110 lsa. I got lucky and found boss 302 mustang pushrods on ebay that were 7.625 inches and got them for $40 shipped from crane cams! Also im using the magnum heads so its actually .501 lift lol but anyway i have stock springs...

    I need more compression!!

Sorry i should also mention that i was suggesting the thin headgaskets and head shaving if you kept the la series heads. Sorry for any confusion. How involved are you wanting to get to gain your comlression?
  27. dustinmoran91

    I need more compression!!

Swap to some magnum series heads if you can. Theyll outflow just about any LA series casting while the 63cc chambers will increase compression quite a bit. Youll need an Ebay intake, pushrods, and youve already got oil through lifters im sure. That stuff will probably cost $300-400 depending on...

    Dodge 360 more HP.

Welcome! If its a two barrel carb you can change intakes and add a four barrel, add some headers better ignition, thinner head gaskets and mill the heads down a little bit. Slightly bigger cam. Theres alot of little things that can be done to increse power but dont know if a 100-150 horsepower...
