    Re-installing damper on 383.

I try to avoid using industrial grade jack hammers on dampers, but I see where you're coming from

    Re-installing damper on 383.

Lightly tap it down from the center until you can get 3 or 4 full turns on the Damper bolt, then just draw it the rest of the way with that. 40 plus years of doing this, including Top Fuel Dragsters, and it never even occurred to me that I should use any sort of special tool.

    400 with 440 crank

No, it makes greater torque at lower RPM. Faster revving is a byproduct

    400 with 440 crank

A shorter rod sees greater angularity earlier, as measured in crankshaft degrees than a long rod, so it is pushing into the cranks rotation rather than down on it. At lower RPM this gives peak pressure more leverage to spin things

    400 with 440 crank

Peak numbers are going to be about the same. The real difference is how the short rod engine will hit the converter. Back to back, the difference is pretty profound

    400 with 440 crank

Building a low deck stroker with a 440 crank, and using 440 length rods completely defeats the purpose of building such a beast...just keep it simple and use the 440 block. That combination using a B length rod is a whole different story. By shortening up the ratio and increasing angularity...

c body exhaust manifolds on a 400 in our duster

Check the casting numbers..they look later than 70, but I could be wrong. The pre heat shield manifolds are definitely a cleaner fit. They work with a 440 pretty much the way yours do with the 400

c body exhaust manifolds on a 400 in our duster

Those are 70s era manifolds. A little thicker and sit a little higher than the 60s era ones usually used. I don't see any issues in the pics you posted, what exactly is the problem?

    Manifolds?

I can get you a couple of pics tomorrow. The torsion bars are not a factor here..it's steering box and shaft clearance.

"Ran Fine When I Pulled It", Yeah Right!

I had a stock 400 that ran just about perfectly around town. No miss, no unusual oil use, decent mileage and pick up. Tore it down to do a build on it. Nearly every top ring was broken, and the cylinder walls had deep, uneven gouges all around the top and middle of the bores. Actually had to...

    "Bullet nose" harmonic balancer questions.

You can substitute it with one from a cast crank 400. Same amount of balance weight in the same place, but with a bunch less mass

Anyone here put a 354 in a Dart?

The 354 block is very close in all dimensions to an LA. Motor mount ears, and trans bolt pattern are the same (spacer is needed because of longer crank flange on the Hemi) Exhaust is actually easier for the Hemi than for either BB or SB Wedge, because the Hemi has downward facing exhaust ports...

Need help and info to help out my autistic son with his project

A 440 is tough in an A Body. All of the major header manufacturers make sets that will work, but they fit much better with a 383/400. One low cost option are C Body log manifolds. Passenger side fits right in, driver side needs to have some of the steering column trimmed away. Not perfect...

The cover with that tab is for a C Body. A used the same as B. One small tab at the very rear for the #8 wire. 2,4 and 6 tuck under from the front.

    Harmonic Damper

I've substituted the huge 440 damper with the much lighter 400 cast crank one many times with no issues. Might want to look into that.

    452 Head question

The damper is part of the HP designation on the later engines. If it has a Windage tray, it also has spring dampers

    63 max wedge?

If your friends block started as an Industrial or Marine engine, it should have the AAQA mark cast into the right front face of the block. That would make it worth a couple of bucks to someone looking to restore or accurately clone a Max Wedge. Also, the 413 goes out to 426 with just a .070...

383 build help one piece at a time

Probably not worth getting involved with it for any sort of N/A performance build. 383's and 400's are cheap and plentiful enough.
