Cheapest way to lock up a non sure grip?

Hello! I've got my hands on a 742 diff with a 4.86 open ratio. This one will only ever be used on the track. I currently have a 741 3.55 sure grip unit that I put together myself. Now I live in Sweden and it cost quite a lot to buy the sure grip and the other parts to renovate and put that one...

Do you run the shifter cable before or after the crossmember?

I'm installing a B&M Quicksilver shifter. I'm concerned about the shifter wire hole. After some measurements it looks like the hole for the cable will be just in front of the support for the crossmember. Meaning the wire will then have to pass the crossmember support and there will be a kink in...

    3.31 to 3.73 worth it?

Hello all! Will it be worth the work changing from 3.31 to 3.73 ratio? I have the 741 center and the 3.73 is the "biggest" gear I can find for that center. I want to be quicker of the line. Also played with the thought of changing to a higher stall converter. My current combo: 1965-273 727...

Advise on re-aligning 8 3/4 sure grip splines.

I’m putting together a 8 3/4 rear axle. It’s not on the car but on my work bench. When installing the axles the passenger side wont fully seat. I believe it is the splines in the sure grip that is misaligned. I have the clutch type. I did some research and found two ways of...

Easiest way to remove and install rear axle?

Getting ready to swap my 7 1/4 for a 8 3/4. I have not done this before, I'm also rebuilding the 8 3/4 swapping gears etc. So I follow the manual closely. When removing the axle it seems like it might be an idea to drop the leaf springs down towards the rear of the car. Seems like it might...

Do I go for the complete 489 center or just a brand new sure grip?

I recently bought an 8 ¾ axle with the 741 center and 3.23 ratio. It’s an open axle. I want a sure grip. Now my question is, I have the opportunity to buy a complete 489 center with a used clutch sure grip and 3.31 ratio for the same price as just the brand new sure grip for my 741 center...

8 ¾ What may have caused this?

Swapping rear end and recently picked up an 8 ¾. It’s open, but I want to put a sure grip in it so I took it apart today. Look at the pictures. Everything else looks good. But the diff is damaged just where the bolts are in more than one place.

Picked up an 8 3/4. Help me identify the numbers

The casting number is 2070741. So it's a 741 house right? There is also a large x. If you look at the picture there is also the number 24, 7H1. There was also 824 written in white letters on the other side of the carrier. Anyone know what the 24, 7H1 and 824 might tell me? Previous owner...

Lost in the sure grip jungle!

I'm swapping my rear end to a 8 3/4 - 741 - 3.23 open diff. I'd like to swap out the open diff before i install the new rear axle. I’ve done searches here and turned out a bit confused. Sure grips, true tracs, powertrax, lockers, slip diff, clutch, cone, etc. Lots of options! It seems like...

    First test-drive today! “Howling” noice!

Short version: This winter I replaced the slant 6 in my duster with a 273 and a 727 trans. Yesterday I got my driveshaft back from the shop that had shortened it. So I could take it for a test-drive for the first time today. I took it real slow and carefully, quite nervous! There was a noice...
